Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is all about the release of Avatar. While the set as a whole is trending down as it reaches full release, Appa, Steadfast Guardian (borderless) more than doubled in price this week to $21. The four-drop has proven itself as one of the early winners from the set—not just being a solid fair card as a twist on Restoration Angel, but also an infinite combo piece in conjunction with another airbending card and Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius. The card also has a surprising amount of Commander demand thanks to new Avatar commanders, many of which care about bending, playing from exile, or being an Ally—all of which want Appa, Steadfast Guardian (borderless) in the 99. At nearly $25 it will probably take some Standard results for the four-drop to keep climbing, but it seems that it was clearly underestimated during spoiler season.
Meanwhile, Toph, Earthbending Master from the Avatar Eternal set shot up 166% this week to $40. While this Toph isn't especially popular as a commander, it is strong in the 99, where it not only shows up in various earthbending decks but is also one of the easiest ways to gain experience counters, making it a popular addition to decks like Azlask, the Swelling Scourge (borderless) as well. Jumpstart cards are weird. Compared to a premier set, they tend to be under-opened, which sometimes leads to the most popular Jumpstart cards being fairly expensive. Both Scythecat Cub and Rev, Tithe Extractor (anime) from last year's Foundations Jumpstart are over $30, and both see less play in Commander than Toph, Earthbending Master at the moment, according to EDHRec. So while the long-term trajectory is likely down, it isn't impossible that Toph, Earthbending Master sticks near $40 if it's one of the best-played cards from Avatar Jumpstart.
Finally in Commander, Keranos, God of Storms gained 143%, up to $11, thanks to the new PlayStation commanders Atreus, Impulsive Son (Playstation: God of War: Norse) and Kratos, Stoic Father (Playstation: God of War: Norse) reviving interest in the Gods archetype in Commander. The big lesson here isn't about Keranos itself—at this point you'll have to pay more if you want a copy—but about unique commanders from Secret Lair drops: a lot of people build around these cards. We saw it with the Marvel Lair drop a year ago, and now we're seeing it again with PlayStation. Next time some unique Secret Lair legends are revealed, pick up the synergy pieces quick, because they are likely to get a lot more expensive.
