Commander Clash S4 Episode 11: New Years Resolutions! (Breya vs. Saskia vs. Thada vs. Yidris)

Hello and welcome to Commander Clash, a video series where several MTGGoldfish contributors battle in a four player Commander game for fun and bragging rights. With a new year upon us, now is the time for introspection and goal-setting to lead to more personal growth in the upcoming year. To this end, each of us thought about what we could personally do that might challenge us to become better, more well-rounded Commander players. Here's our New Years Resolutions!

  • Tom points to an overall lack of Artifact decks on the show and decides to build one led by Breya, Etherium Shaper
  • Seth tries his hardest to play an "Aggressive" deck that, you know, attacks or something ... with Thada Adel, Acquisitor
  • Richard, the king of Jank Tribal, challenges himself to play a good tribe for once, this time running Human Tribal led by Saskia the Unyielding
  • Tomer plays his most hated archetype, Chaos, and tries his best to make it something he might enjoy with the help of Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

Each of us are playing a deck we normally would not play. How successul will we be with these self-imposed changes? Let's find out! And as usual, another quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

We all set out to challenge ourselves this game. I think we succeeded for the most part? New Years resolutions aren't something you accomplish in one day, but rather a goal that you keep working toward, so it's better to view this as the first step in our goals. Maybe one day we'll see Seth play full-blown Kaalia of the Vast Aggro. Maybe.

I was pretty negative about my deck, but viewing it again while editing this video, I must say that I kinda like it at this point. It's certainly a Chaos deck, but I think I successfully wove underlying goals aka win conditions into the deck that evolves organically from the chaotic cards I'm running; having your spells replaced with other spells works perfectly with a Storm payoff like Empty the Warrens, and swapping around permanents makes token makers like Tireless Tracker insanely valuable. I daresay my build is one of the more competitive Chaos decks out there!

Now a question to you all: what do you feel about Combos in Commander Clash? I personally would like to see more of them, as long as they're more on the jank side rather than consistently winning by turn 4. Unlike Aggro, which has a habit of knocking out someone early before being stopped and then the game continues with only 3 players, when Combo decks win they usually take everyone out at once. That means nobody is left out of the game, and if the game ended too soon we can just shuffle up and play another. But I want to hear your thoughts! Do you want to see more Combo in Commander Clash?

Submit Your Decks!

We're taking a week off for the holidays, but when we return we'll be doing another Viewer Submitted Deck and submissions are open now! Link us a deck list that you'd like us to play in the comments section below. A couple submission guidelines to help your chances of being selected:

  • Keep decks around ~25 tickets, our usual deck budget. Create the deck through MTG Goldfish and the Online Price is the ticket price. We don't mind if you go over-budget for janky cards that are oddly expensive online or are integral for your deck to function, but we want to avoid decks that are running the full set of fetchlands + all the dual lands when it's not necessary.
  • Have a decent ratio of mana (lands + ramp), interaction, card draw, etc. I've skipped over many sweet deck ideas that were filled with sweet thematic cards but left no room for basic deck needs.

That's about it! I'm excited to see what you guys and gals submit to us this time!
