Commander Clash S3 Episode 15: Hour of Devastation Gods

Hello and welcome to Commander Clash, a video series where several MTGGoldfish contributors battle in a four player Commander game for fun and bragging rights. The Hour of Devastation is upon us, and a new set means sweet new cards for us Commander players! This marks our first week of showcasing the new Hour of Devastation cards and we're kicking things off by building decks around the brand new gods. Here's what we've got:

  • Tom crafts a scheming and manipulative deck worthy of the greatest god of them all, the God-Pharaoh, Nicol Bolas
  • Jennifer withers away all her opponent's creatures while drawing tons of cards in the process with The Scorpion God
  • Seth wheels and deals, drawing all the cards while cultivating a massive token swarm with The Locust God
  • Tomer plays a Mill deck that plunders his opponent's graveyards for value with The Scarab God

Which god will prove itself the most worthy? Let's find out! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

First, apologies for the sloppy video editing this time; I had a lot of technical issues this week that made things very difficult, but it's all been sorted out for next week!

As for the games: wow! Game 1 was short and brutal, but Game 2 had one of the best endings so far in Commander Clash! It was a flavor-win too, as Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh has that title for a reason! Ultimately he used his opponent's strengths and beat us over the head with it.

The archetype that Tom's deck falls is a "Copy / Steal Stuff" archetype that I'm not sure ever was given an "official" name, but nonetheless it's very popular in Commander. It's fun using your opponent's cool cards against them, and furthermore it's incredibly powerful too: instead of relying on your own deck for threats and answers, you can cherry pick the best threats/answers from 3+ decks for each opponent you're up against! There's a great variety of builds in this Copycast/Steal archetype, but generally you want to be in Blue for creature theft (Control Magic), instant/sorcery theft (Diluvian Primordial), artifact theft (Thada Adel, Acquisitor) and Clones; Black for graveyard theft (Reanimate); and (sometimes) Red for Threaten effects. Some of my favorite commanders for this archetype include Sen Triplets, Daxos of Meletis, Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge, Thada Adel, Acquisitor, and of course, Nicol Bolas flavor deck.

I also recommend this archetype as a deck that scales based on your playgroup: if your opponents are all playing super weak Grizzly Bears, then the cards you steal/copy are going to be equally weak, but if your group is running powerhouses like Blightsteel Colossus then you'll take those instead! So you don't have to worry too much about your deck being too strong/weak based on what you're up against, though in most casual groups you will have a leg-up on the competition because you'll always be stealing/copying the best thing available.

Now, what are you supposed to do if you're on the receiving end of this tactic? Easily the best answer is this gem: Homeward Path. Your opponents can Reanimate your creatures or Control Magic them but you can simply tap this land to return it to your side of the battlefield. It taps for colorless, but that's its only downside, and such a low risk is well worth its upside if your deck is creature-heavy!
