Commander Clash S3 Episode 14: Personal Commander

Hello and welcome to Commander Clash, a video series where several MTGGoldfish contributors battle in a four player Commander game for fun and bragging rights. This week we're sharing a personal tidbit about ourselves by building a deck around a card that symbolizes something important in our personal lives. Here's what we've got:

  • Tom builds a deck made entirely of cards that he loved when he first started playing Commander, led by Thraximundar
  • Jennifer pilots a deck made in honor of her recently adopted dog, Feldon, with Feldon of the Third Path
  • Seth takes another crack at building the first Commander deck he ever made, Glissa, the Traitor
  • Tomer builds a deck around the only Hebrew promo card in existence, Glory, with Archangel Avacyn at the helm

Sit back, relax, and let us tell you a little bit about ourselves over a fun game of Commander! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

I was in a position where I could kill someone this game, but I chose not to. That could've cost me the game, but I reckoned that it would be more entertaining not to take someone out; besides, I figured that someone else would spend their resources to land the killing blow, so I was free to do other things. Let me know what you guys thought of that. If you'd rather I just go for kills then I'll keep that in mind for the future.

We also got to see Death Cloud in action and I'm curious what you guys thought about the card. I personally think it's really sweet and worth playing as long as your deck is designed to work under it, like Seth's deck was (all that recursion!). We almost never play full-blown Stax decks, but we do sprinkle in resource denial now and then, and I like seeing those cards played. On the other hand, it does slow down the game, and unfortunately it meant that Jennifer (and to some extent also Tom) couldn't play the game anymore. Would you rather we not play it in the future?

A quick explanation of my deck since it didn't really play out like I expected: I wanted to build a deck around Glory, which gives your creatures protection from a color. So I built a Control deck that runs lots of Red board wipes (Blasphemous Act, Earthquake) and ways to protect my own creatures from those wipes (Glory, Mark of Asylum). It's basically an updated version of my Budget Archangel Avacyn deck. I added the Kaldra package because it actually works very well with multiple board wipes since it survives everything except for exile effects, and because assembling Kaldra is awesome. The main gimmick this time wasn't to assemble Kaldra, but hey, if it works then it works!

Next Week: Anything Goes(?)

I'm pretty sure we'll be doing another Anything Goes next week but I'm not 100% certain, hence no announcement at the end of the video, sorry! We will confirm on Twitter once we know for sure. Most likely it's just me not remembering! As always, we love to hear from you guys! Tell us what you like to see, what you don't like, any ideas that we can put forward for future videos, or anything else you'd like to tell us! You can reach us in the comments section below, email me at tomer@mtggoldfish.com, or tweet me @BudgetCommander.
