Fish Five-0: Green Stompy

If you've seen my article for some decklists I wanted to try out with Core 2021, you'll know that Green Stompy has had some sweet new cards I wanted to play with.

Gameplan

We're an aggressive deck looking to curve out but now we've got some new toys!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

I believe that Scavenging Ooze will be a huge player in this standard when you think about how many graveyard synergistic things are running around. A few examples are Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Cauldron Familiar. This isn't even touching on the fact that we can also shut down Elspeth Conquers Death's third chapter! The card also gain us life against aggro so this 2/2 Ooze can easily go the distance for two mana.

On top of lil' Oozey, stompy got Garruk's Harbinger which gives us a way to dig for more threats if it connects with the opponent or their planeswalkers. I think what draws me in is that it can hit a planeswalker and still trigger. This deck doesn't run any Garruk planeswalker cards but that could change at any point! I know right now, there aren't a ton of black removal spells being played outside of Noxious Grasp but the hexproof from black really ensures that this can't be easily dealt with outside of burn spells and trading with it. Before Harbinger, the three drop slot was occupied with cards that didn't pass the Teferi, Time Raveler test and "dies to removal" IE Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig and whatnot. Of course, Yorvo grows but I'd rather play Harbinger as being able to get more threats seems way better than putting all of our eggs into one big Yorvo.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

We also got another sweet three drop that I'm trying out. If planeswalkers are extremely popular, Sparkhunter Masticore will be there to keep them in check. Its got solid stats and tons of valuable activated abilities but most importantly, it has Protection from planeswalkers so that means you can't bounce it with Teferi, Time Raveler or phase it out with Teferi, Master of Time. This seems extremely relevant as this card will require an exiling sweeper like Extinction Event or better. Just a reminder that this can't be targeted by your own Vivien, Arkbow Ranger!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

A reprint that I think will help this deck out significantly is Heroic Intervention as our weak spot was a deck that ran a ton of sweepers like Shatter the Sky but now stompy decks have a way of fighting back!

Conclusion

The deck finished at 4-2, and the deck can definitely use some modifications. Here's an updated list I'd run with on the ladder

This version will give us access to Garruk, Unleashed which is untested at this point but could be worth a shot as it gives our threats more ways of trampling so we can't be chump blocked. All the trample also pairs quite well with Garruk's Harbinger! I moved all the Sparkhunter Masticore to the sideboard because right now, the meta seems dominated by Cat decks and Reclamation. The planeswalkers are currently in hiding but once they come out, you know for a fact I'll start jamming the Masticore in the main deck.

 I'll see you out there on the ladder!
