Week 1 Kaldheim Decklists

Kaldheim's release means it's time to show off some of the decklists I've been noodling with. Most of these decklists are just rough drafts that I tested out during the Early Access event with a bit of the ladder.

Day 1 of a new meta isn't always the best idea for purely reactive control so I've gone ahead and made a few tap out/midrange lists that mainly aim to blow up our opponent's stuff or interact with them on the stack.

First, we've got Snackdos (Snow+Rakdos)! This deck is all about controlling the early game through removal spells until we've found a way to set up for standard's new savior, Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor and a crowd favorite in Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. With two clunky planeswalkers, we get to play with a card that I've been in love with... Dream Devourer. The card may not seem like much but I look at it as a mana dork. It's amazing in the early game and awful when topdecked. Being able to accelerate Blood on the Snow and any of our big planeswalkers allows us to bump our late-game plans by two turns!

A deck that was pretty solid before KHD's release was Abzan Yorion

With all of the sweet sagas that are hitting the meta through this set, Binding the Old Gods got lost in the noise and I have to sing the praises for this card. I played against it numerous times and that saga is the truth. It plays up any nonland permanent and helps us ramp. Ontop of that, we've got Kaya the Inexorable! The card has quite the powerful -3 as the ability to pick off cards like The Great Henge is so sweet.! Either way, this deck can really grind out our opponents !

If you're in the mood for more of a draw, go play style then we've got Foretell Control!

Slow and grindy not your jam? Here are some lists of the tribal decks Kaldheim is bringing to the table!

Berserkers are one of the tribes that got love this set and the berserker mechanic is Boast. If we can take advantage of Boast, cards like Frenzied Raider could get big. The tribe will have to be able to stop Doomskar and that's where I figured that a card like Glorious Protector could be worth the "splash". We'd ideally Foretell the angel to get around the double white cost. I think the tribe has some aggressive starts but needs something to help catch them back up when they've fallen behind. Otherwise, the biggest issue we'll encounter is getting around Lovestruck Beast

A deck that is much bigger, at least in spirit, is going to be Giants!

It's primarily an Izzet Giants deck but the addition of black gives us access to Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger and King Narfi's Betrayal. The tribe looks to rule the ground by dropping beefy bodies that have synergies with cards like our one-sided sweeper Battle of Frost and Fire, Glimpse the Cosmos, and Quakebringer. All these high synergy cards pair nicely with King Narfi's Betrayal as we actually rely on our graveyard a bit. Hopefully we just dodge the graveyard hate! A thing to note about the deck is that it can be a bit awkward when most of our threats don't come down until turn three. The deck is in its early stages but looks like it could be fun once a few more sets show up to support it. For now, this is what we've got to work with!

The last tribe on our list is a tribe that hasn't had a ton of success due to its clunky nature... that's right, it's Angels!

The deck felt a lot better than the angel decks in the past but at the end of the day, I'm not entirely sure how a slow and clunky deck like this beats Rogues or keeps up with Adventures. However, Righteous Valkyrie has been really solid as a three mana 2/4 with flying is an amazing rate. On top of that, standard has so many powerful creatures that hitting the 27 life mark isn't that difficult. The deck was definitely fun when you got it going and will surely make angel lovers happy.

Conclusion

We're just scratching at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the things that Kaldheim will do for the meta. The set seems to be extremely tribal driven with tribes that haven't really gotten a ton of time in the standard light so it'll be fun to try these tribes out. Hopefully, Kaldheim's cards will shake up an Eldraine dominant format.
