Vintage 101: The Horror! The Horror!

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of Vintage 101! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're finishing up our look at Duskmourn for Vintage! In addition to that, we've got a look at some of the data from 4Seasons Bologna and some Challenges from the past week.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Spooky Scary Set Review

We're finishing up our set review for Duskmourn: House of Horror this week! There wasn't much left to cover here, so let's see what else this set has in store for us!

Ancient Cellarspawn

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This card is probably not good, but I love the concept of it, especially when you consider Bolas's Citadel is a card. I definitely want to put this into play and Citadel someone. Seems fun (but not competitive).

Experimental Lab // Staff Room

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Lands decks don't usually show up too much in Vintage, but having a Crucible enchantment in green that's also a Yawgmoth's Will for a turn seems kind of fun. Would be curious where this could go.

Giggling Skitterspike

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

An indestructible threat that can easily become a 6/6, works well with Steel Overseer and deals a bunch of damage to an opponent? Seems like it would be super fun to try out somewhere.

Unwanted Remake

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This remake may not be great, but it's an intriguing effect for one mana. In Vintage the manifest feels like so much less of a downside that one mana destroy a creature is not unreasonable.

4Seasons Bologna

Very recently in Bologna, Italy was the 4Seasons Summer event, which had multiple differening events from various formats. Of those events was the Main Vintage event, which had approximately 64 players in it. These events are generally very interesting. You can find the main 4Seasons Tournaments page on Facebook over here.

Let's take a look at the Top 8 for this event. You can find the decklists for these over here.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Breach 1st Luca Bastianelli
Initiative 2nd Lukasz Matusiak
Oath 3rd Phil Richman
4C Lurrus 4th Joe Brennan
Dimir Lurrus 5th Damiano Buttarelli
Dimir Lurrus 6th Raffaele Ramagli
Esper Lurrus 7th Enrico Vair
Jewel Shops 8th Nicolas Wallian

Quite a bit of Lurrus here, with 4/8 of the Top 8 taken up by the deck. I hope to maybe see some more data out of these events in the future.

Vintage Challenge 32 9/12

The first Challenge event of the week was the Thursday event. This event had 56 players in it according to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Lurrus was the most popular deck of the event and it had a pretty reasonable win rate. Jewel and Initiative were both popular but their win rates weren't great. Dredge did very well as did Breach.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Lurrus Control 1st unluckymonkey
Dimir Lurrus Control 2nd Montolio
Breach 3rd TrueHero
Dredge 4th Lord_Beerus
Dimir Lurrus Control 5th duke12
Dimir Lurrus Control 6th _Batutinha_
Initiative 7th Lollopollo2001
Breach 8th thedeck84

Quite a bit of Dimir Lurrus in the Top 8 here. In fact the end of the event was two Dimir Lurrus decks. Let's take a look at the winner.

Loading Indicator

Very interesting build here. Dauthi Voidwalker looks quite good here, given that it fights opposing Lurrus' very well. Also, Feed the Swarm is super neat.

In Second Place we had another Dimir Lurrus deck.

Loading Indicator

Fairly stock looking variant of this deck. Bowmasters and Frog is really good for sure.

Also in this Top 8 we had Breach.

Loading Indicator

Kind of cool to see Breach bounce up and around. Haven't quite seen it for a while. Also, Dack Fayden? Be still my beating heart!

Vintage Challenge 32 9/13

The second Challenge event of the week was the Friday event. This event had 45 players in it according to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Lurrus was the most popular, but it's win rate wasn't fantastic despite some solid finishes. Dredge looked really good here, as did Doomsday.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Azorius Control 1st BiggestBird
Dredge 2nd laughingrock
Dredge 3rd Danielpena397
Doomsday 4th Tsubasa_Cat
Doomsday 5th discoverN
Dimir Lurrus Control 6th unluckymonkey
Esper Lurrus Control 7th albertoSD
Dimir Lurrus Control 8th JOANANTON

Big spread of Dredge/Doomsday/Lurrus. At the end of the event it was Azorius Control that won.

Loading Indicator

Sort of like Initiative Tinker without the Tinker. Pretty cool list honestly.

In Second Place we had Dredge.

Loading Indicator

The Dredge lists keep fluctuating back and forth on what they're doing. I think it makes sense because it keeps people guessing what the deck is wanting to accomplish.

Further down the Top 8 we had Doomsday.

Loading Indicator

The Frog/Voidwalker combo here looks super neat. I like the more Tempo-esque strategy to push the opponent off their initial gameplan of trying to prevent Doomsday.

Vintage Challenge 32 9/14

The third Challenge event of the week was the Saturday event. This event had 55 players in it according to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dredge was super popular here and it's win rate was very good. Dimir Lurrus Control seemed to do quite poorly. Oath looked good as did Jewel, and so did Sphere Shops.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Sphere Shops 1st Montolio
BUG 2nd musasabi
Jewel Shops 3rd Jumba
Dredge 4th Dogeminer02
Dredge 5th LucasG1ggs
4C Lurrus 6th ziofrancone
CounterVine 7th UrpurEmanure
Dredge 8th Lord_Beerus

Quite a bit of Dredge here. At the end of the event it was Sphere Shops that won.

Loading Indicator

Old school Ravager Shops! Gotta love it. I am digging this. Also, Null Elemental Blast in the sideboard is super neat.

In Second Place we had BUG.

Loading Indicator

Frog and Bowmasters continues to look really good in all of the lists I see them in. They're a very powerful combination of cards.

At the bottom of the Top 8 we had a 4C Lurrus pile.

Loading Indicator

Ajani, Nacatl Pariah seems like such a sweet sweet card. I am loving it.

Vintage Challenge 32 9/15

The final Challenge event of the week was the Sunday event. This event had 45 players in it according to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Lurrus was the most popular deck and it's win rate was very good. Jewel Shops also looked great here, as did Tinker variants.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Jewel Shops 1st yPrincipe
Dimir Lurrus Control 2nd Bezerra_da_Silva
Dredge 3rd Zenith777
Dimir Lurrus Control 4th Junkmener
Dimir Lurrus Control 5th Ark4n
BUG 6th RyanWu
Esper Tinker 7th Cioffo86
Lurrus DRS 8th unluckymonkey

Fair amount of Dimir Lurrus here, but at the end of the event it was Jewel Shops that won.

Loading Indicator

Quite a solid looking list. It's so interesting how this deck quickly spun and evolved without 4x Saga. It might have made this deck even better.

In Second Place we had Dimir Lurrus.

Loading Indicator

I think if this deck is going to be the most popular fair deck of the format going forward, Dauthi Voidwalker definitely does seem like a great card to combat it. It snags so much away from the other Lururs players.

Speaking of Lurrus, at the bottom of the Top 8 we had Lurrus DRS.

Loading Indicator

Voidwalker and Frog seem like insanely good cards for sure, and I also like the one of surveil land in the manabase. Those cards are quite powerful.

  • Montolio has a video on Dimir Lurrus. Check it out here.

The Spice Corner

Cats.
