This Week in Legacy: Super Duper Qualifications

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to be covering the Legacy Super Qualifier from over the weekend! We will also be reminding folks about the BCDL events upcoming this week and next week in addition to the Challenges occurring over the past week.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Legacy Super Qualifier 10/6

This past weekend we had a Super Qualifier event! These events are cool because they extend invites down to the Top 4 to the Regional Championship while also being enterable with Event Tickets, Play Points, and Qualifier Points (QPs). According to the MTGO website there was 236 players for this event, which is pretty cool.

Unfortunately, there is no data sheet for this event. With each passing week, it seems like the data matters less and less to the community as a whole. The end of this year is possibly the death knell of the Legacy Data Collection Project, and I hate to see it go because the data is helpful and does provide insights into the format. However, the community response and action on this has been resounding, indicating that nobody really wants to help collect the data.

While we have no data, we can see at least the top part of the metagame looks like. I will note that out of the Top 32, Psychic Frog made up 41% of the creatures overall in the deck, with the only next creature coming in at 25% in Sowing Mycospawn. From that point we do get a laundry list of Eldrazi cards being big (because that deck is mostly creatures) and Metamorphosis Fanatic at 22%.

One interesting thing to note is that we also had Faerie Macabre at 47% of decks in the Top 32, mainly due in part to the fact that Macabre is not really a creature but a spell for the most part, and is very indicative that Reanimator is such a powerful archetype in the format that almost half of the format is playing some number of specifically this graveyard hate (a piece of hate that is an activated ability, not a spell that's cast) to combat it. It's pretty interesting, but it speaks a lot to Reanimator's power level.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Red Stompy 1st jade-venus
Riddlesmith Combo 2nd Killabee
Cradle Control 3rd Oppa
UB Reanimator 4th Bezerra_da_Silva
Red Stompy 5th Munchlax446
Eldrazi 6th Gxs3v3n
Cradle Control 7th 10drills
UB Reanimator 8th DInglis

In all reality, this is a reasonable looking Top 8. There's a number of different archetypes. At the end of the event it was Red Stompy that won.

Loading Indicator

Pyrogoyf is such a powerful looking card out of MH3. It does so much for such a small investment of 3R and can put in a ton of damage quickly just via its ETB ability. I like The One Ring here as well.

In Second Place we had Riddlesmith Combo.

Loading Indicator

It's kind of sweet to see Killabee back at it again, being the combo master they are. They posted on Twitter that they are currently 14-2 in games versus UB Frog decks with this list, which is absolutely sweet. This list looks like a bunch of fun too.

Also in this Top 8 we had some Cradle Control. Let's look at the top-placing one.

Loading Indicator

One super wild thing about this list is its sideboard. Having a transformational sideboard into Smog Combo is kind of wildly interesting and super fun. I also really like Talon Gates of Madara in this list. It seems quite strong.

Further down the Top 8 we had Eldrazi.

Loading Indicator

This list continues to look like the most stock-looking list of Eldrazi there is. If you're looking for a list to test against or test with, this is a really strong place to start with understanding.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Legacy Events

Just a reminder that this coming Saturday at The Warp Gate in Columbus, OH is BCDL 17 and the following week at Asgard Games in Hosuton, TX is BCDL 15 (A time travel issue caused BCDL 15 to never exist, so now it exists to spite us all). These events are great, and well worth checking out.

You can find the full details of how to register for these events here.

Legacy Challenge 32 10/2

The first event of the week was the Wednesday night event. According to the MTGO website there was 43 players for this event. There was no data for this event.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
UB Reanimator 1st JLitty
Dimir Tempo 2nd Just_Roll
Red Stompy 3rd Filho_do_MOL
Eldrazi 4th varal
Red Painter 5th Gatsukawa
Sneak and Show 6th DethFrmAbove
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) 7th Oscar_Franco
Worldgorger Dragon 8th morenoHARDCORE

Very interesting Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was UB Reanimator that won.

Loading Indicator

As we have seen, Metamorphosis Fanatic is good in this deck. The power level it has at several different areas of the game is quite good.

In Second Place we had Dimir Tempo.

Loading Indicator

Emperor of Bones seems like a really sweet card in this deck. Getting back a creature or just being able to repeatedly exile cards seems so very strong. Bonus points if you nab an opponent's Metamorphosis Fanatic.

Also in this Top 8 we had Sneak and Show.

Loading Indicator

Atraxa is just so very, very, very good in these decks. Even just putting one in off Sneak Attack and getting to mega-Dig Through Time is insanely powerful.

Legacy Challenge 32 10/4

The second event of the week was the Friday night/Saturday morning event. According to the MTGO website there was 42 players for this event. There was no data for this event.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Doomsday 1st artisan
Mystic Forge Combo 2nd splev
Red Stompy 3rd Mogged
Izzet Tempo 4th PunishingWaterfalls
4C Nadu 5th jibeta
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) 6th Parrotlet
Eldrazi 7th Cabooseinator
Eldrazi 8th Boin

Another interesting Top 8. Some decent spread of decks here. At the end of the event, it was Doomsday that won.

Loading Indicator

You know a card is very powerful when even Doomsday is shifting to a plan that includes it instead of being all in on their combo game plan. The inclusion of both Tamiyo and Frog is really important to this deck right now for sure.

In Second Place we had Mystic Forge Combo.

Loading Indicator

This deck is really cool. Fleshraker really improved this deck a bunch, to the point where we're even seeing powerful new lands like Urza's Workshop in it, which is super sweet.

Also in this Top 8 we had 4C Nadu.

Loading Indicator

Nadu looks really good right now. I really like the build splashing into black for primarily Leovold. Keen-Eyed Curator is very nice right now too.

Legacy Challenge 32 10/5

The third event of the week was the Saturday morning event. According to the MTGO website there was 41 players for this event. There was no data for this event.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Tempo 1st CoolUser
Dimir Tempo 2nd NimblestMongoose
BR Reanimator 3rd snoopy-magic
Eldrazi 4th Jumba
Dimir Tempo 5th ecobaronen
UR Delver 6th L4rss0n
UB Reanimator 7th RyanWu
UB Reanimator 8th 2plus2isfive

Quite a bit of Dimir here. In fact, the finals was a pair of Dimir Tempo lists, so let's look at the winner.

Loading Indicator

Both Fanatic and Ghost Vacuum showing up here is pretty immense. The fact that Fanatic just works in this Tempo shell with only one Reanimate to enable that part of the card is wild, but it's such a strong card that I'm not surprised.

Let's look at the Second Place list.

Loading Indicator

This one is a bit more of a standardized Dimir Tempo list. Shoot the Sheriff is a neat card in this list as just some straight-up removal in the deck.

Further down the Top 8 we had UR Delver.

Loading Indicator

Detective's Phoenix is kind of a super sweet card. Being able to bestow it on a Murktide to give it haste to bring in lethal to the opponent seems very real, and the fact that the Bestow requires you to collect evidence may also boost the Murktide which is cool.

Legacy Challenge 32 10/6

The final event of the week was the Sunday event. According to the MTGO website there was 32 players for this event. There was no data for this event.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Doomsday 1st m_himukai
UB Reanimator 2nd musasabi
Dimir Tempo 3rd RyanWu
Dimir Tempo 4th subesube0417
Dimir Tempo 5th SHAKELION
Naya Stompy 6th motown4
Eldrazi 7th Cabooseinator
Dimir Tempo 8th Maxtortion

Tons of Dimir in the Top 8. At the end of the event though it was Doomsday that won.

Loading Indicator

Barrowgoyf is such a strong sideboard option for this deck when shifting fully into a tempo role in the sideboard. It's a strong card and closes games pretty quickly.

In Second Place we had UB Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

Fanatic looking so good that this list is even cutting Animate Dead which is wild. Also, Ghost Vacuum continues to look quite good in sideboards.

Further down the Top 8 we had Naya Stompy.

Loading Indicator

Dreadnought combined with The Mycosynth Gardens is a super sweet piece of synergy. The fact that you can Crop Rotation for it is kind of sweet. Pyrogoyf continues to be very strong overall in many of these Stompy decks.
