It wasn't too long ago Mono Blue was around to farm salt from the ladder, and with a black-dominated meta, Mono Blue is looking to rise up once again!

We've got our new Curious Obsession with Combat Research! The card only pumps our legendary creatures but that's not enough to deter us as we only care about card draw. We've also got a plethora of cheap threats this format with Delver of Secrets , Spectral Adversary , and Suspicious Stowaway ! All of them have some form of evasion wether it be flying or flat out unblockable! Try to mulligan to some form of early action as you need to get on the ground with an attacker early. Once we've got an attacker, we back it up with protection spells like Slip Out the Back and Shore Up

Once we've landed a single threat or two onto the board, we sit back and counter and tempo our opponents out of the game. One of the sweet new counterspells that pairs quite nicely with our new game ending Djinn is Ertai's Scorn! Back when Mono Blue was a thing, you had to jam two spells in hopes of drawing out the blue mages' interaction, but Ertai's Scorn allows us to get a major discount if it's the second spell cast! On top of that, if our Djinn is out, we only need to pay U to cast Ertai's Scorn!

Why do we have play Thran Portal ?  The card is pretty miserable but sometimes we just need the flexibility in our lands. It's able to be a black source for when we need it as we have a few cards we splash black for! I don't know if this card is a main stay but I'm just trying it out until we get Underground River in Standard. We just need the untapped mana and the ability to add black in the event we have Rona's Vortex or Ertai Resurrected . Rona's Vortex has been an absolute power house bouncing whatever we need. If we get to the late game, we can tuck whatever is problematic. Ertai Resurrected has proven to be a damn powerful card as the card disadvantage is well worth countering or removing their absolute best spell. At the end of it all, you'll also have a 3/2 flash threat to snipe a planeswalker! It's also nice that you can counter a Channel ability like Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire if needed. 

Conclusion

The deck feels really well positioned in a midrange meta where everyone is jamming Liliana of the Veil, Sheoldred, and Invoke Despairs. Being able to Spell Pierce or Make Disappear is such a big tempo swing when our opponents are trading their 3+ mana spells for our 1-2 MV spells. As long as a Red Deck or a go wide strategy isn't running around, our deck feels absurdly powerful!
