Single Scoop: Historic Solar Flare


With Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger out in the Historic meta, we had to find ways to cheat the big eldrazi titan into play in the best of one queue. What a better way to do that than trying to get good ol' Esper Solar Flare back together?

We play the control game early by sweeping the board and removing what we can and then once we're stabilized, we start setting up our self mill engine to find our reanimator targets. I couldn't be happier to see a card like Unburial Rites as this will now allow us to throw away cards from our library without worrying about losing out on our reanimation spell. Currently, these are the ways we can fill our yard up..

These are the current cards I'm running to throw away cards and I must say, Thirst For Meaning is great and Ashiok, Dream Render can really help us go off if not dealt with and it's passive is actually relevant with how many ramp decks there are. Ashiok is a bit scarier to play in best of one because aggro decks really don't care about Ashiok and maybe that's to our advantage? But as of right now, I like it. In the future, we could try a different package that uses Glass Casket and Emry, Lurker of the Loch so we can constantly reoccur casket and get some self mill in and Emry would allow us to use Glass Casket again. 

Now that we've milled ourselves? What are the targets we're looking to bring back?

Massacre Girl is something we need in the deck to help us deal with cards like Adanto Vanguard while also being a target we can reanimate which is extremely helpful at times. I don't think there's much that needs to be said about Agent of Treachery so let's just get right to the big Eldrazi Titan! Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is an indestructible threat that can exile 20 cards off the top of our opponent's libraries and that is why we're here! It can win through damage or just by exiting your opponent's deck after a few swings. Just be mindful of cards like Act of Treason as it has happened to me....

Conclusion

The deck went 5-2 and did struggle against decks that are extremely aggressive or have protection like Karametra's Blessing. I think we might need to change our removal set up to play a few copies of Extinction Event if we're looking at more aura based decks in the meta. It is nice that we have the main deck Ashiok, Dream Render as the graveyard hate has been sweet. We didn't really get too many matchups against Lukka Fires but I have to imagine that can't be a great matchup unless we get our reanimation engine online early. I'm not quite sure there's much our deck can do outside of playing couterspells in the deck but that seems difficult when we're trying to tap out almost every turn. 

I've also thought about just adding Yorion and turning this into an 80 card deck but with 80 cards, it'll be a lot harder to dig and find our reanimation pay offs. The only way around this is if we add Gravebreaker Lamia but, Entomb, it is not. It's a bit too slow for best of one and just not worth it. Where the archetype is at right now, I would say the deck is fun but probably not something that you should rush to craft unless you just want some reanimator fun!
