This Week in Legacy: Scoring BIG!

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're finishing up our look at Outlaws of Thunder Junction and that includes a look at the BIG Score and the Commander sets. In addition to that we've got a bunch of MTGO-centric news and some MTGO Challenge events to cover as well.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Opening the Vault

We are finishing up our set reviews for Outlaws of Thunder Junction this week. We had a bunch of additional cards come to light after the article last week got published, and we had everything from the BIG Score sheet as well as the Commander products.

Let's see what's happenin' in Thunder Junction, shall we?

Crackling Spellslinger

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

The fact that this is in red gives me pause because there are so many red rituals in the format available, and Mono Red Storm decks keep getting more and more love. Fun fact, if you give an existing Storm spell another instance of Storm, the two will trigger separately!

Elemental Eruption

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Another Storm card that can be cast off red rituals, this seems pretty great as a Burning Wish target. Make a whole bunch of flying 4/4s with prowess? SEEMS AWESOME.

Lock and Load

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Okay yeah this seems pretty good with High Tide. Plot this early and then cast it when you need it? Seems great.

Lost Jitte

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

A one mana cost Jitte is something, and this one does a bunch of different things. Putting counters on and preventing blocks is neat, but also untapping lands can be pretty egregious. The fact that you can get this off Saga gives me pause. While this isn't the original Jitte, the fact that this does different things to me says its more of a roleplayer card and different.

Memory Vessel

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Memory Jar this is not. The fact that it's giving your opponent a way to use the cards it hits, in addition to the fact that it exiles itself so no Welder shenanigans, means this one is out.

Pest Control

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This card seems incredibly good in the right deck. The fact that it cycles is impressive and means it's generally never dead. This could be good.

Simulacrum Synthesizer

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This card is kind of unique in a lot of ways. There's maybe some room for one of these in Legacy Coveted Jewel lists, given those play things like Phyrexian Metamorph to copy this and Jewel. I don't see it in 8Cast because that deck plays a huge mess of 0-1 MV cards. It's still a really neat effect.

MTGO Announcement - MTGO Creator Program

Daybreak Games announced last week the opening of their MTGO Creator Program, a program for creators to engage more with Magic Online. I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I am officially going to be a part of this program! This means you will also see more MTGO stuff coming down the pipeline for multiple formats that I write about in addition to the article content I'm already providing. I'm excited for this opportunity for sure.

MTGO Announcement - More Legacy Challenges!

Daybreak also announced this past week that they are going to be trial'ing some new Challenge event times for various formats by adding more Challenges! What this means for Legacy is the fact that we are going to be getting a new Challenge during the week on Friday at 8:00 PM EST.

This is awesome stuff to see. Daybreak Games continues to be trying more and more things and it's awesome to see how much they are supporting the communities, especially the Eternal communities.

Legacy Challenge 32 4/6/2024

The first Challenge event of the weekend was the early morning 32-player Saturday event. This event had 52 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.

You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

RUG Delver was the most popular deck of the event and despite some top finishes it's overall win rate was less than 50%. Red Stompy did great here and despite a really strong finish, Mono Black Reanimator's overall was dragged down a bunch. Context is definitely important when looking at data.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Death and Taxes (Yorion) 1st yoshiwata
Mono Black Reanimator 2nd mei0024
RUG Delver 3rd Junkmener
RUG Delver 4th _INF_
Death's Shadow 5th adorno666
Grixis Delver 6th ecobaronen
Red Stompy 7th Dreddybajs
Black Midrange 8th aooaaooa

Very interesting Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was D&T that won.

Loading Indicator

Solid looking list here. I like including the Surveil land here, because it does some interesting things with Serra Paragon to filter something to the graveyard to cast from there.

In Second Place we had Mono Black Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

The sideboard white splash here for Serenity is pretty cool. The juke of sideboarding into Bowmasters/Voidwalker is very strong as well. Unmarked Grave as an additional Entomb for Archon of Cruelty is really cool.

Also in this Top 8 we had Death's Shadow.

Loading Indicator

Shadow in general has been somewhat gone from the overall metagame as of late, so it's interesting to see it creep up here. Stalactite Stalker seems like a really strong card in this deck for sure.

At the bottom of the Top 8 we had a Black Midrange pile that is basically Golgari Scam.

Loading Indicator

Turbo Scam here for sure. Dark Ritual and friends, alongside Once Upon a Time and some strong sideboard cards.

Legacy Challenge 32 4/7/2024

The second Challenge event of the weekend was the early morning 32-player Sunday event. This event had 57 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.

You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the datasheet here.

Turbo Muxus was the most popular deck here, and it had a strong finish but did medium in overall win rate. RUG Delver looked great here.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Cradle Control 1st Testacular
Death and Taxes (Yorion) 2nd olbeda
UB Reanimator 3rd OSCA66
RUG Delver 4th SkysTheLimit
RUG Delver 5th Ryuho090
BR Reanimator 6th snoopy-magic
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) 7th BERNASTORRES
Mono Green Cloudpost 8th akaBIGshaq

Highly interesting Top 8 here for sure. At the end of the event, it was our good friend Testacular on Cradle Control.

Loading Indicator

This list looks quite strong for sure. Soulless Jailer as a sideboard card here is quite interesting for sure. I am also digging the surveil lands here too. Those lands definitely seem to have made their way into Legacy for sure.

In Second Place we had D&T.

Loading Indicator

Pretty similar list to the winner from Saturday. There being a Sword of Light and Shadow in the sideboard is ultra cool here.

Also in this Top 8 we had UB Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

The current "big bad" of the format here. This is a pretty solidly stock looking list overall. Two md Brazen Borrower seems quite good right now.

At the bottom of the Top 8 we had Mono Green Post.

Loading Indicator

I am digging this list quite a bit really. Very clean and straightforward and knows what its game plan is.

Legacy Challenge 64 4/7/2024

The final Challenge of the weekend was the mid-afternoon 64-player Sunday event. This event had 81 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.

You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the datasheet here. Because we didn't have Round data for this event, we only have metagame share data.

Goblins was the most popular deck of the event, followed by Beanstalk decks and Red Stompy.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Scam 1st wambocombo2020
Esper Control 2nd Iwouldliketorespond
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) 3rd Jesusmtg
Cradle Control 4th Jadisouzaft
Red Stompy 5th J.A.Eliso
Lands 6th Granham
Death's Shadow 7th foobaj
Goblins (Turbo Muxus)  8th Raydan

Definitely an intriguing Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was Dimir Scam that won.

Loading Indicator

The addition of cards like Currency Converter here and this being a Saga variant is pretty neat. It's not quite full on Scam, but it is sweet.

In Second Place we had Esper Control.

Loading Indicator

Oh this list is super neat. Samwise the Stouthearted + Wasteland loops is sweet. The sideboard juke of going bigger into Triumph of Saint Katherine is really sweet.

Also in this Top 8 we had Beanstalk Control.

Loading Indicator

Woohoo, the Leyline of the Guildpact variant here. Broadside Bombardiers as a way to chuck your Scion of Draco for a bunch of damage is gross. Neat list for sure.

At the bottom of the Top 8 we had Lands.

Loading Indicator

I definitely like this Sphere Lands list. It's really powerful it feels like.
