This Week in Legacy: Player Spotlight Series - Jarvis Yu's Port of Wonders
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we are doing yet another Player Spotlight Series! This one is with a long time Legacy and multi-format stalwart, Jarvis Yu! In addition to that we've got a paper event announcement and a mess of Challenges to get through.
Without further ado, let's dive right in!
Player Spotlight Series: Jarvis Yu
We are continuing to do more of our video-based Player Spotlight Series, with this week's being a good friend of ours in the form of Jarvis Yu! Jarvis is well associated with Legacy, but he also talks about the importance of diversifying your skills and also about an event near and dear to his heart.
Major thanks to Jarvis for taking the time out of his day to hang out with us a little bit! You can find the Legacy Rumble Against Cancer presented by Dice City Games sign-up link over here!
Paper Event Announcement - Buffalo Chicken Dip Legacy 14
Our good friend Rob Wilson of Buffalo Chicken Dip Legacy has one last Ohio event in the can for us before he leaves for a new opportunity! This BCDL 14 is being held at Guardtower West in Hilliard, OH and entry is $55. You can find the sign-up for this event here.
Legacy Challenge 32 4/17
The first Challenge of the week we have to cover is last Wednesday's event. This event had 52 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here. We don't have full Round data for this event, so we only have metagame shares.
Beanstalk decks were quite popular, as was Goblins.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
BR Reanimator | 1st | karatedom |
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) | 2nd | 336767332971 |
Selesnya Depths | 3rd | DNEELEY |
UB Reanimator | 4th | Sven745 |
Soul Cauldron Combo | 5th | UrzaEnjoyer |
Maverick | 6th | Harry1232 |
Lands | 7th | rosti56 |
Doomsday | 8th | levunga21 |
Pretty interesting Top 8 overall. At the end of the event it was BR Reanimator that won.
This list is integrating a little Tin Fins tech in the form of Shallow Grave. Definitely a very powerful and straightforward list.
In Second Place we had Goblins.
Very clean and fast list here. Unlicensed Hearse seems like a very strong card at the moment.
Further down the Top 8 we had Soul Cauldron Combo.
I really love this list quite a bit. Agatha's Soul Cauldron is a really sweet card, and the combos it allows to exist are really super interesting.
Legacy Challenge 32 4/19
The next Challenge is the late night Friday event. This event had 54 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
UB Reanimator was quite popular and it's win rate was pretty solid. The rest of the decks above the cut here had pretty medium results overall.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Simulacrum Affinity | 1st | PunishingWaterfalls |
UB Reanimator | 2nd | TheWitchKling |
Blue Artifacts Stompy | 3rd | TonyScapone |
8Cast | 4th | karatedom |
Red Stompy | 5th | SiL3nTGoaT |
Death and Taxes (Yorion) | 6th | Akaleth |
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) | 7th | 336767332971 |
Blue Days Stompy | 8th | wutup |
What a really interesting Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was a deck that literally did not exist before Outlaws of Thunder Junction that won.
Holy cow this deck is super cool. Building around Simulacrum Synthesizer is such a neat thing to do. I especially want to call out a card that I actually missed getting to talk about in my set review in the form of Lavaspur Boots. This card is extremely powerful because it enables lines where you can now attack with both of your Constructs off an Urza's Saga instead of one of them, changing up the heuristics of how one has to approach this normal line. This deck is so neat.
In Second Place we had UB Reanimator.
Really solid looking list here. Wail of the Forgotten making it more into the sideboard capacity here is very interesting.
Further down the Top 8 we had TonyScapone on a sweet Izzet Stompy build.
This list is really sweet, sort of like 8Cast with a bunch of extra cards like The One Ring and Paradox Engine. Really sweet.
Legacy Challenge 32 4/20
The next event was the early morning Saturday event. This event had 54 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
RUG Delver was super popular and also had a strong win rate. Of the decks above the cutoff, UB Reanimator did exceptionally well. The new Simulacrum Affinity deck didn't do so hot on this event.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
UB Reanimator | 1st | DavidVanDerRaven |
RUG Delver | 2nd | JPA93 |
Red Stompy | 3rd | mei0024 |
Dimir Scam | 4th | Oceansoul92 |
Doomsday | 5th | clan |
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) | 6th | medvedev |
Dimir Scam | 7th | Ryuho090 |
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) | 8th | choutin |
Pretty interesting Top 8 actually. At the end of the event it was UB Reanimator that won.
Very straightforward list here. The sideboard is very wide ranging overall with a lot of options for various decks.
In Second Place we had RUG Delver.
Another dive into the RUG Delver world of cutting down to only two Questing Druid and zero other green cards, but I like the clean look of the list overall. The sideboard has some sweet stuff in it and the Surveil land in the main deck is sick.
Also in this Top 8 we had Doomsday.
Very solid looking Doomsday list here. The Surveil land here is also really cool as is the copy of Unauthorized Exit out of the sideboard.
Legacy Challenge 32 4/21
The final regular Challenge of the weekend was the very early Saturday night/Sunday morning event. This event had 44 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Both RUG Delver and UB Reanimator were popular, with both having strong win rates. Goblins did very well here too. The new Simulacrum Affinity deck seemed to suffer here.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
BUG Scam | 1st | Thebigempty92 |
Goblins (Turbo Muxus) | 2nd | medvedev |
Red Painter | 3rd | kanican |
RUG Delver | 4th | M_4 |
Red Stompy | 5th | powered_by_VANYA |
UB Reanimator | 6th | kasa |
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) | 7th | Viatt |
Grixis Delver | 8th | MestariMatt |
Pretty cool Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was BUG Scam that won.
Witherbloom Command is really such a powerful Magic card when combined with Wasteland. The Uro here is super nice too.
In Second Place we had Goblins.
Very similar deck to the other high placing one this weekend, with the exception of the addition of four copies of The One Ring, which is super cool.
Also in this Top 8 we had Red Painter.
PAINTER PLUS SOUL CAULDRON?! Yes, this speaks to me. Such a cool deck.
Legacy Showcase Challenge 4/21
This weekend's events capped off with the Legacy Showcase Challenge event! This is a Premier Play event that costs Qualification Points to enter and the Top 8 all receive an invite to the Showcase Qualifier at the end of the season.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
UB Reanimator was very popular and it's win rate was quite solid. Goblins did well and the new Affinity deck had a middle of the road win rate overall but a strong finish in the Top 8.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Beanstalk Control (Yorion) | 1st | jtl005 |
BR Reanimator | 2nd | snoopy-magic |
Simulacrum Affinity | 3rd | Xwhale |
Lands | 4th | DeathWrongShaman420 |
UB Reanimator | 5th | Ark4n |
UB Reanimator | 6th | ecobaronen |
UB Reanimator | 7th | DavidVanDerRaven |
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) | 8th | Nammersquats |
Lot of UB Reanimator here in the Top 8, but it was Beanstalk that won it all.
Oh wow this list is nuts. FOUR COPIES OF Ground Seal?! This deck is definitely aiming to gain ground against Scam and other graveyard centric decks at the moment. What a really interesting looking deck overall.
In Second Place we had BR Reanimator.
Super solid looking list here. New card alert spotted at Harvester of Misery out of the sideboard. Seems like an interesting and flexible card.
Also in the Top 4 we had Simulacrum Affinity.
One of the more interesting things about this shell is just how flexible the shell is overall and what can play into it. Affinity creatures and stuff like Patchwork Automaton are really great. This is a deck I look forward to trying out.
Rounding out the Top 4 we had Lands.
Good old Punishing Fire Lands is super sweet. Loving this. I too would dig seeing a copy of Lavaspur Boots find its way into this deck because I think it would be quite good here.
