This Week in Legacy: Horizontal Application
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're continuing our set review of Modern Horizons 3 including the Commander cards! In addition we've got a bunch of events to look at including TWO separate Legacy Qualifier events, so much that I'm only going to look at the finalists from each because there is a LOT.
Without further ado, let's dive right in!
Modernized Warfare for a Legacy World
We're continuing our set review of Modern Horizons 3 from last week with a focus on some of the more colorless/Devoid cards we didn't cover last time and also the Commander cards. There's a fair amount to discuss so let's get to it!
Glaring Fleshraker
This card is sweet. I think Mystic Forge decks are going to love this. Turning cycling through your deck into pinging your opponent to death is really sweet while also generating extra colorless mana? Yeah this card is good.
Kozilek's Command
This one is interesting to grok. It seems pretty cool overall, as it does some really cool things. I don't know if it will see play, but it's really neat.
Nulldrifter
A callback to Mulldrifter, this seems great even if you cast it for Evoke as you're getting the draw regardless (since it's a cast trigger). If you can put this into play though, a 4/4 flier with flying and annihilator 1 is pretty good.
Ulamog, the Defiler
As we will see, Cloudpost players are eating good with this set for sure. I don't know if this is that good over Ceaseless Hunger (exiling two permanents usually better than making your opponent exile their library) but in a pinch this can just close games out hard.
Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
I had to re-read this one again a few times, but it's actually pretty cool sounding. It being able to blink anything and you can maybe save it with Karakas seems pretty cool. Being able to eat Constructs and reset Murktides seems cool though.
Kozilek's Unsealing
This seems like a sweet card. Being able to up convert small stuff to mana, with the option of converting cards like Thought Monitor into even more cards is pretty cool. I don't know where this goes, but it's a very interesting card that I'd like to see show up.
Ugin's Binding
This card is neat but I'm not sure if it has an existing place it could go. Pretty cool effect though.
Ugin's Labyrinth
I think this card is going to be better in Modern than it is in Legacy. Sure you can save your card if they have Wasteland but then it feels like you didn't do anything. I'm not sure if this does much currently, but maybe if there's another Eldrazi deck that shows up.
Eldrazi Confluence
Being able to -3 three different things is cool but also just all the other effects here seem neat. If there's an Eldrazi deck again for the format, this could see play in it.
Mutated Cultist
Wow this card is incredibly sweet. One of the things this card can do is rip all the counters off a Dark Depths on a cast trigger (which is wild) but then at the same time it then makes 10 mana from that interaction. A Cloudpost Depths deck playing Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger seems sweet.
Wonderscape Sage
Bouncing Urza's Saga seems SWEET. Also you get to draw a card? Definitely curious about this.
Horizon of Progress
A rainbow land that can also put other lands into play and can also draw a card? This seems sweet even as a one-of in some Lands type piles.
Planar Nexus
OMG It's RANGELING. The fact that this is a Locus is big. Cloudpost players doing good here.
Talon Gates of Madara
This card is super sweet. Yet another card that phases out Phyrexian Dreadnought but also fun fact, you can put this into play off Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and phase it out before you would have to sacrifice Uro, which seems superb. Pretty cool card and pretty cool effect.
Trenchpost
Someone at Wizards REALLY likes Cloudpost, and if we don't see Post become a variety of decks again out of these sets, I'll be surprised. Another way to Leverage your posts into a win con all on its own? This is great.
Legacy Qualifier 5/31
As noted there were two Legacy Qualifier events last weekend so it's good to cover both of those first. These are not like Super Qualifiers that you can enter with tickets, these ones cost QPs to enter and only the finalists get the qualification to a Regional Championship event. The first of these took place on Friday 5/31. This event had 96 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
UB Reanimator was the most popular deck of the event but it's overall win rate was lower than 50%. Red Stompy looked really good here as did RUG Delver.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Dimir Scam | 1st | Lord_Beerus |
The EPIC Gamble | 2nd | Killabee |
RUG Delver | 3rd | _INF_ |
RUG Delver | 4th | JUJUBEAN__2004 |
Red Stompy | 5th | xJCloud |
8Cast | 6th | _IlNano_ |
RUG Delver | 7th | Marcuzinho |
Red Stompy | 8th | Gul_Dukat |
Pretty reasonable Top 8 here. RUG Delver did very well here as did Red Stompy, but the winner was Dimir Scam.
The addition of two copies of Animate Dead to this pile is interesting for sure. Seems quite good as a flex spot here. Go for the Throat is also really interesting.
In Second Place we had Killabee doing Killabee things.
I always love seeing these decks that Killabee comes up with. They're always so wild. Burning Wish is really sweet here.
Legacy Qualifier 6/2
The other Qualifier event this weekend was held on Sunday 6/2. This event had 97 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Again, UB Reanimator was insanely popular and its win rate this go-around was really good. Beseech Storm also looked good while everything else above the cutoff was in the middle of the road.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Red Stompy | 1st | Dreddybajs |
UB Reanimator | 2nd | Rulleboren |
Dimir Scam | 3rd | kobayui |
UB Reanimator | 4th | jvidarte |
UB Reanimator | 5th | Venom1 |
UB Reanimator | 6th | kenjinsakura |
UB Reanimator | 7th | ADP_Player |
Beanstalk Control (Yorion) | 8th | McWinSauce |
Lot of UB Reanimator here, but at the end of the event it was Red Stompy that won.
I definitely like the idea of slotting The One Ring into this deck. It's so easily castable and powerful. Also Canoptek Scarab Swarm is such a sweet card out of the sideboard.
In Second Place we did have UB Reanimator.
This is following some tech pushed by several players including MTGO user karatedom where this deck is now actively cutting Orcish Bowmasters for Dauthi Voidwalker which seems quite good and seems to be doing well for this deck.
Legacy Challenge 32 5/29
The first Challenge event of the week was the 5/29 event. This event had 46 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Red Stompy was just over UB Reanimator here, but despite a top finish (and a better finish) UB had a better overall win rate. Selesnya Depths also looked great here.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
8Cast | 1st | DNSolver |
Selesnya Depths | 2nd | Sprouts |
Red Stompy | 3rd | _Corno_ |
UB Reanimator | 4th | wiky |
UB Reanimator | 5th | _BOI_ |
RUG Delver | 6th | Marcuzinho |
UB Reanimator | 7th | boytriton |
Mono Black Reanimator | 8th | Roodslay |
Very interesting Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was 8Cast that won.
Pretty solid looking list here. I like the addition of Geralf, the Fleshwright. Seems like a wildly more interesting card to cast in this kind of shell than Sai, Master Thopterist.
In Second Place we had Selesnya Depths.
Nice looking list. I like seeing tech like Lavaspur Boots getting implemented here. That card is exceptionally strong and not just in the Stompy decks that play Saga.
Legacy Challenge 32 5/31
The next Challenge was the Friday evening/Saturday morning event. This event had 42 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
UB Reanimator was highly popular here and had a solid win rate. Red Stompy also looked great, as did Beseech Storm.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Beseech Storm | 1st | Eureka22422 |
Red Stompy | 2nd | BERNASTORRES |
Stiflenought | 3rd | BrokenVerse |
The EPIC Storm | 4th | Bryant_Cook |
UB Reanimator | 5th | karatedom |
Red Stompy | 6th | MayhemDJ |
8Cast | 7th | SuperCow12653 |
RUG Delver | 8th | Peterpan226 |
Fairly varied Top 8 actually here. At the end of the event it was Beseech Storm that won.
Bowmasters making a totally free card to sacrifice to Beseech the Mirror seems great. This list is sweet.
In Second Place we had Red Stompy.
Solid looking list. Broadside Bombardiers, despite now only seeing play really in these Red Stompy decks for the most part, is still very very very good.
Legacy Challenge 32 6/1
The next Challenge is the early morning Saturday event. This event had 56 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
RUG Delver was the most popular deck, but it's win rate was not so good. UB Reanimator looked great here as did Depths.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
UB Reanimator | 1st | random_deck |
Jeskai Control | 2nd | Alico |
Beanstalk Control (Yorion) | 3rd | Rank1Lynx |
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) | 4th | trunks132 |
UB Reanimator | 5th | GzusReturned |
BR Reanimator | 6th | Magic_Dads71522 |
Red Painter | 7th | choutin |
UB Reanimator | 8th | Darthkid |
Quite a lot of Reanimator here. In fact UB Reanimator won the event.
Very interesting looking list. I like the red splash out of the sideboard here for things like Meltdown and Molten Collapse. There's a lot of flexibility to this deck for sure.
In Second Place we had Jeskai Control.
Solidly straightforward list. Have not seen a Snapcaster Mage in a true hot minute, so that's cool.
Legacy Challenge 32 6/2
The next Challenge was the early morning Sunday event. This event had 55 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Red Stompy was the most popular deck of the event and it's win rate was pretty medium. Wildly UB Reanimator was split across several other decks, but it's win rate was great.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Black Scam | 1st | Flossed |
Red Painter | 2nd | choutin |
UB Reanimator | 3rd | _Batutinha_ |
Grixis Delver | 4th | C_S_W___ |
RUG Delver | 5th | SHAKELION |
8Cast | 6th | lztlzt |
Soul Cauldron Combo | 7th | UrzaEnjoyer |
Omni-Tell | 8th | Schranz0127 |
Pretty cool Top 8 here actually. At the end of the event it was Mono Black Scam that won.
Very cool looking deck here. I love Stalactite Stalker, it's a sweet card for sure. Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor is also super cool.
In Second Place we had Red Painter.
Straight Mono Red Painter is really interesting, and slotting in the Soul Cauldron combo is really cool too. Very neat looking list. Broadside Bombardiers continues to be great.
Legacy Challenge 64 6/2
The final Challenge event of the weekend was the 64 player event on Sunday. This event had exactly 64 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
UB Reanimator was super popular and had a very middle of the road win rate, while RUG Delver also looked good as did Black Midrange piles. Red Stompy looked poor despite a strong finish.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Golgari Scam | 1st | grymn |
Red Stompy | 2nd | Filho_do_MOL |
Lands | 3rd | empiricism |
Doomsday | 4th | Maxtortion |
Jeskai Control | 5th | viktor_von_muerte |
Dimir Scam | 6th | JPA93 |
UB Reanimator | 7th | hermanomlg |
UB Reanimator | 8th | Graciasportanto |
Fairly interesting Top 8 actually. At the end of the event it was Golgari Scam that won.
Once Upon a Time seems like a sweet card in this kind of deck actually. It nabs a lot of different things here, which is nice.
In Second Place we had Red Stompy.
People have definitely been picking up on how to approach this build with The One Ring for sure. I like it. It's a solid take on this archetype.
