Historic 101: Withered Control
Gameplan
By now, you know how much I love control, but over the past weekend, one of my favorite players, Guilliaume Wafo Tapa played a control list loaded with singletons that I would consider a work of art. I had to take it to the ladder. Of course, when taking a Mythic Championship list that is built to contain a specific meta, you've gotta adjust it for the ladder so I did some slight tweaking but for the most part, it's the same list. One thing I really liked coming out of this entire tournament is the use of Davriel's Withering.
To be completely honest, I kind of forgot this card existed but the fact that you're able to Perpetually shrink something is big as that allows us a main deck answer to something like Arclight Phoenix and ways to get around an Auras deck looking to use Kaya's Ghostform to get around our sweepers and spot removal! Another card that brings me joy is seeing The Scarab God get put into decklists in 2021 so I'm definitely jumping with joy to bring our friend, The Scabby G, out of the sideboard!
Conclusion
Historic has tons of cards running rampant with recursion so it may not seem like much, but Davriel's Withering is a card I would run four copies of in the main deck right now. It's just so good on the ladder and allows us to get rid of the ever-popular Witch's Familiar and so forth! Control right now is looking good with black mana so if you're looking to try out a non jeskai list, I'd definitely recommend something that is Dimir based!
