Historic 101: Fair Magic 2021


A couple weeks back we tried to push a Chevill, Bane of Monsters deck through a league and it didn't do well. However, I was sent a list piloted by ChristopherAwesome (originally from Poptart Kitten) and it .... is.... beautiful!!! It's exactly what I like to do which is some good ol grindy midrange fun. Not only does it have the bane of monsters but it's got some spice! Here's the list:

The deck is loaded with solid two-drop creatures like Scavenging Ooze and Glint-Sleeve Siphoner so being able to reoccur them with cards like Lurrus of the Dream-Den and Agadeem's Awakening is what will keep our low to the ground midrange deck alive in the late game.

Most of our two-drops can help us generate value over time. Scavenging Ooze is one of our best threats as we need to exile Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath ASAP. Glint-Sleeve Siphoner is historic's attempt at Dark Confidant. Of course, we've got Chevill, Bane of Monsters as a way to replenish our hand as playing a bunch of 1 for 1's isn't great by today's standards. Chevill definitely helps with that a bit as a removal spell that gains us some life and gets us a card back.

The spice I had mentioned above comes in the form of Inscription of Ruin. This is a card I completely forgot existed but in a deck that is loaded with two drops and wants to leave our opponents with nothing in hand, this is perfect! Paired with Thoughtseize, our deck is quite disruptive and recursive. The best part is that the card has applications in almost every match because at it's worst, it can still be a three mana sorcery speed Smother that scales into the late game with kicker! This card impressed me a ton after playing the deck so definitely give it a shot.

Conclusion

We went 4-1 overall and had fun the entire time! It's exactly the grindy type of Magic I enjoy. It felt amazing using Inscription of Ruin to make the opponent pitch two cards into the bin. It reminded me of one of my favorite instants in Modern, Esper Charm. Maybe Inscription is the card I didn't know I needed in my midrange life. The issues I had with the deck was being able to deal with hyper-aggressive decks. Decks like Mono-Red or Goblins. Witch's Vengeance pairs nicely with our deck. I found myself constantly wanting a copy so maybe increasing the number of Witch's Vengeance in the sideboard would smooth our aggro match up out. Other than that, the deck was a thing of beauty.
