Single Scoop: Is Esper Better Than Azorius Control?

Gameplan

For awhile it just felt better to play Azorius Control as the mana base was smoother, but the format has come to a point where it might be worth it to add black mana!

With how aggressive a red deck can be, we really need cheap removal and Fatal Push is one of the best things we could have to help keep us at a somewhat healthy life total. Along with that, Greasefang along with a ton of artifact decks need answering and Void Rend can answer anything that isn't a land. This means we can blow up a greasefang or the Parhelion itself to buy us the time needed to fully sweep the board. Speaking of sweepers, Shadows' Verdict is probably one of the best things as we're able to hit creatures in the graveyard to sweep Rakdos decks or any Ob Nixilis, the Adversary decks. Lastly, The Meathook Massacre is a way to keep our health up while an opponent sacs their cats to household appliances. Meathook has proven to be an all-star and it feels right at home here!

Conclusion

The inclusion of black gives us all the answers we need to stay afloat in this format. In a Best of One format, it's nice to be able to have your bases covered and this is probably where I'd start if I were to play a control deck!

Thanks for watching the content.
