Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the biggest finance news is Arclight Phoenix which jumped more than 200% in price to nearly $14. While the mythic is showing up in Standard in various control and spellslinger decks, the more notable development is Arclight Phoenix putting up finishes in Modern. Cards like Manamorphose and Faithless Looting make it pretty easy to get Arclight Phoenix into and then back out of the graveyard. However the future is unclear; if it ever breaks out in a paper Modern tournament it could shoot higher, but shocklands and the other high value cards from Guilds of Ravnica should keep it from getting too out of control.
The other big piece of news this week was Golgari Midrange developing into the deck to beat in Standard. Prices are starting to reflect this new reality. Both Jadelight Ranger (up 43% to $15) and Vraska, Relic Seeker (up 46% to $23.44) jumped this week, while other pieces of the deck like Vivien Reid, Vraska, Golgari Queen, and Vraska's Contempt also posted solid gains this week. While it's possible that Golgari really is the best deck in Standard, it's also true that we have a Pro Tour coming up in a few weeks which could reset the metagame. Normally the peak for Standard cards is over the winter. Holding onto your copies for at least a couple more months should be a fine plan.
Finally, there's been a lot of talk about Magic Online prices lately after Legacy and Modern cards dropped significantly over the past few weeks. This is normal at rotation as people sell of their eternal staples to buy new Standard cards and play in prerelease limited events. With at least one of the winter Pro Tours likely to be Modern, I'd expect to see prices recover over the next few months. If you've been thinking about getting into the format digitally, this is a great opportunity to save a few bucks.
