Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance the biggest winner was Planar Void, with the one-mana graveyard exiling enchantment shooting up from just over $1 to $10. Innistrad: Crimson Vow gave us a new legend that cares about cards in exile in Umbris, Fear Manifest, which seems to be driving the interest in Planar Void. While Planar Void might not be as strong as something like Leyline of the Void in terms of gameplay, from a financial perspective it's super old and has never been reprinted, leaving it with fairly low supply even though it's an uncommon, which in turn makes it easy for prices to spike with even a small increase in demand. The good news is that shooting up to $10 will probably get Wizards to reprint Planar Void - it could show up anywhere from a Standard set to a Modern Horizons style supplement product. In the meantime if you're building Umbris, Fear Manifest you'll likely have to pay a premium.
Meanwhile in Standard we see some of the uncommon class enchantments - Druid Class and Wizard Class in specific - creeping up in price. While both enchantments are still around $1, in terms of% they were among the biggest Standard winner this week, climbing 28% and 16% respectively. Neither sees any meaningful amount of play in 60 card formats, which means once again it is Commander driving the demand. Both seem like solid long-term holds and maybe even buys (assuming they dodge reprinting), fitting into most card draw matters and lands matter commander decks. At a minimum I'd pull them from your Forgotten Realms bulk and stick them in a box somewhere in your closet, they have the look of casual-staple uncommons that end up being surprisingly expensive a few years down the line once they are out of print.
Finally, Mystic Gate shot up to $50 after being as low as $10 at the beginning of the year thanks to a Double Masters reprinting. The land went from more or less unplayed in Modern to a staple in Blue-White Control decks which has some challenging mana costs thanks to cards like Counterspell, Archmage's Charm, Supreme Verdict and Solitude. If you need a copy now you'll save a few dollars picking up the Double Masters version (which is currently $35), although just how long this discount lasts remains to be seen; for the rest of the cycle the price of a Double Masters copy and a Shadowmoor copy is roughly the same. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that none of the other lands in the cycle cost more than $20 and most are below $10. It doesn't seem impossible that a card like Sunken Ruins (currently $20) could experience a similar price increase in the future if control colors in Modern shift towards blue and black rather than blue and white. While I wouldn't rush out to buy filter lands, Mystic Gate does show that the cycle still has Modern potential, even in 2021. It wouldn't shock me to see the rest of the cycle climb as we move further and further away from the new supply offered by Double Masters.
