Expressive Iteration As Foretold Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Box

This week is dig through your Standard bulk week in the world of Magic finance, with several playable uncommons from recent sets increasing in price to the point where they are worth digging from your bulk. Expressive Iteration leads the way, increasing 147% to $2.17, but close behind are Bastion of Remembrance (up 75% to $3.57) and Sprite Dragon (up 24% to $5.04). What ties all of these cards together? They all see fairly heavy play in non-Standard formats, with Expressive Iteration and Sprite Dragon being staples of various prowess and blitz decks back to Modern, and Bastion of Remembrance developing into a staple of Commander sacrifice decks. With the power of lower rarity cards increasing in recent sets, digging the most playable uncommons from your bulk is looking more and more like a worthwhile endeavor.

Meanwhile in Modern we got more Modern Horizons 2 spoilers this week which confirmed no mana cost suspend cards are returning with Profane Tutor (retro) the first of a new cycle. As a result As Foretold - the best way to cast no mana cost cards without suspending them - ticked up yet again to just under $22, three times its price at the beginning of April. While the free spell decks in Modern seem likely to become more playable thanks to more free spells, the real question is whether there will be enough of these cards to make a functional Commander deck. If so, the sky is the limit for the Amonkhet mythic. My guess is that As Foretold keeps creeping up through spoiler season as more of the set is revealed.

Finally, in more depressing news, the price of Modern Horizons 2 sealed product is off the charts. Wizards sells boxes directly through Amazon, and right now a draft booster box is $285, a set booster box is $319, and a collector booster box is a massive $450. Please don't buy at these prices. Talk to your local game store or buy from Ebay, where both set and draft booster boxes are selling for around $250 and collector booster boxes for around $390 - still not cheap, but a meaningful discount over Wizards' prices on Amazon. Of course, the smartest  move for many players will be to avoid buying a box altogether and focus on the singles they need. While there is a ton of value in a set, any given booster box will be a big risk at current prices.
