Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance is all about Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The biggest gainer by% was Cateran Summons with the sorcery gaining more than 800% from under $1 to over $7. I've been pulling this card out of collections for years. A one-mana tutor is incredibly strong. The problem is you can only tutor up a Mercenary, a creature type that hasn't really been heavily supported since the 90s, but now thanks to Outlaws of Thunder Junction (and also Fallout), Mercenaries are back, including multiple new legends in Rakdos, the Muscle and Vial Smasher, Gleeful Grenadier. Personally I'll be snap selling all the copies I've saved up into the hype. I expect this is the peak for Cateran Summons and if Mercenaries ever get full support (like a Commander precon), odds of Cateran Summons being reprinted seems high. Now is the perfect time to cash out for maximum value.
Speaking of Commander, Heat Shimmer jumped 51% this week to over $16 thanks to Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds. The new Naya legend can easily go infinite with cards like Village Bell-Ringer or Battered Golem, but it needs to have a token enter the battlefield during the turn to copy. Heat Shimmer is the perfect way to do this since the token has haste, allowing the deck to not just make infinite copies of the token, but win right away with them by attacking Splinter Twin style. Keep an eye on other cards that can make token copies of creatures in the coming weeks. I wouldn't be surprised to see more of them spike as players build around the new Ghired.
Finally, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord is still increasing thanks to Vampires in Pioneer, gaining another 41% this week to a massive $64. If you need Sorin, you'll save a bunch of money by looking for the Secret Lair printing, which is still readily available on sites like TCGplayer for around $35 - nearly half the price of the Core Set 2020 version. If you aren't playing with your copies, I'd look to sell them now while prices are high. It wasn't that long ago that Liliana of the Veil (borderless) was a $100 card. Thanks to metagame shifts and reprintings, it's now $13. Sooner or later this will happen with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, which makes holding extra copies risky.
