Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week, the Standard world of finance was mostly quiet as the community focused on Modern and other non-rotating formats thanks to the release of Modern Horizons. The biggest winner this week was a card that hasn't officially released yet in Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis (up 406% to $13), which is showing up in a new build of BridgeVine that can put 100 (or more) on the battlefield by turn three and maybe mill the opponent's entire library with Altar of Dementia. While Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis was likely underpriced a few days ago, it might be overpriced now. Unless the new deck starts putting up consistent results, I'd expect Hogaak to trend down as Modern Horizons is opened.
Meanwhile in Modern, Teferi's Puzzle Box (up around 200% to between $22 and $25, depending on the printing) is showing up as a combo piece with Narset, Parter of Veils. People have been using cards like Day's Undoing in conjunction with Narset, Parter of Veils to Mind Twist away their opponent's hand, and Teferi's Puzzle Box does the same thing every turn while also being tutorable by cards like Whir of Invention. Toss in an increase in Commander play thanks to Narset and the fact that Teferi's Puzzle Box hasn't been printed in more than a decade, the new price might stick, at least for as long as players are building around Narset, Parter of Veils.
Finally, looking at Modern Horizons as a whole, the set's expected value is solid. While you should check out the full expected value breakdown that just went live, the short version is that, at current prices, the average box will come out ahead in terms of value. This means that the prices of cards in the set need to drop a lot in the coming weeks. A decline of at least 30% set wide (and maybe as much as 50%) seems likely. If you need singles from the set, your best financial move is to wait until later in the summer for prices to decline.
