Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of finance things were fairly quiet, although we do see some new Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth cards having an impact on the market. Last week we talked about how Shelob, Child of Ungoliant is one of the new legends people are most excited to build and this week the Spider-related price increases continue with Ishkanah, Grafwidow shooting up 69% to nearly $2.50. Current EDHRec has Shelob as the second most popular commander from the set behind Tom Bombadil (showcase). As such, it wouldn't be a surprise to see other Spider-focused cards increase as people build their decks.
Speaking of new Lord of the Rings commander, Polar Kraken was bought out this week, briefly spiking from $2 to $20 before dropping back down under $5. This seems to be due to The Watcher in the Water, which can untap Krakens, helping get around Polar Kraken's drawback of coming into play tapped. Unfortunately The Watcher in the Water doesn't help you avoid sacrificing an increasing number of lands each turn to cumulative upkeep, which means that Polar Kraken is likely more of a meme than a legitimately good card for The Watcher in the Water decks. This seems to be backed up by the data. Since the buyout on June 12th, not a single copy of Polar Kraken has sold at its new price point. This seems to be a MTG finance play and a misguided one at that. Feel free to ignore the price movement and if you do need a Polar Kraken for some reason, give it a few more days for prices to drop. There doesn't seem to be much demand for the Ice Age rare at all.
Finally in Pioneer, Demilich is on the rise, increasing $42 on the week to $1.50. Last week a build of Izzet Pheonix playing a playset of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realm mythic won a big Pioneer regional qualifier which is what's driving the price increase. Considering the card is still just $1.50 and is a one-print mythic, it could be worth snagging some copies. If Demilich becomes widely adopted in Pioneer Phoenix, it could easily end up being worth a few dollars. There's little downside to grabbing yours now when prices are cheap. It has nowhere to go but up.
