Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finances, two big forces are moving the market: last weekend's Pro Tour Lord of the Rings and the release of Commander Masters. In Modern we're seeing many cards that performed on the Pro Tour stage ticking up in price headlined by Dauthi Voidwalker (up 23% to $10), Fury (up 6% to $43) and Subtlety (up 31% to just under $27). The one big exception here are the Lord of the Rings cards themselves, with Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring (bundle) each losing around 5% this week as the set continues to be opened; a trend that is likely to continue as Wizards announced this week that Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth is on track to become the best selling set in the history of the game by the end of this year. Perhaps the biggest takeaway here is that big paper events do still matter. While Commander might be the dominate force in the Magic market these days, there are still players watching things like Modern Pro Tours and picking up the cards that performed well.
Speaking of Commander, the single biggest gainer this week was Void Winnower (Just Some Totally Normal Guys), with the Eldrazi doubling in price to over $50. It was only a few years ago you could snag the nine-drop for a couple of bucks and as recently as July it was in the $10 price range. But it seems that despite endless complaining about the cost of the Commander Masters precon decks, a lot of players are not just picking them up but spending money to upgrade them. This might be one of those cases where Magic social media isn't representative of the community as a whole. If you just read Reddit, Twitter, or Facebook you'd probably assume that Commander Masters is a flop considering the amount of negative feedback about the high cost of the decks. But it seems in practice a lot of players really don't care, or at least they don't care enough to skip the product, because we've seen a ton of Eldrazi and Slivers spike in price in the past couple of weeks.
Finally, checking in on Commander Masters itself, the set officially released on Friday and prices have dropped a ton in just the past week. Back on July 28th, a complete set of Commander Masters would have set you back $2,020. Today a complete set is down to $1,205, a huge 40% drop in just over a week. As such, there are some great deals on singles at the moment, with many of the Commander staples reprinted in the set already less than half of what they were before. Based on what happened with Double Masters 2022 reprints last year, expect prices to keep slowly trending down over the next several months. For some of the most popular cards in the set like Dockside Extortionist and Teferi's Protection (borderless), the floor came roughly six months after the set released. So you should have a little while to snag what you need before prices start to climb once again.
