Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is all about Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The biggest gainer of the week was Court of Vantress, which more than tripled up from $4 to $15. Obeka, Splitter of Seconds is - by far - the most popular new legend from Outlaws and Court of Vantress's works really well with Obeka's ability to give you multiple upkeeps. You can play Court of Vantress to become the monarch, hit with Obeka, Splitter of Seconds to get some extra upkeeps, and immediately start making token copies of your artifacts. While cards that spike because of a new legend tend to fall back down in price once the hype wears off, I think it's possible that Court of Vantress's price sticks. I've started to add the card to my blue decks as a value card - since it can copy a mana rock, its floor is essentially Manalith - and its ceiling if you can keep the crown is staggeringly high.
Meanwhile, Ugin's Nexus is still on the rise. We discussed the artifact last week thanks to a new infinite turn combo with Esoteric Duplicator and a sacrifice outlet. It gained another 64% this week to over $5. The real question here is if the combo is actually good. Taking infinite turns is taboo in Commander, which leaves formats like Pioneer or Modern to make the combo work. If it actually evolves into a tier strategy the sky is the limit for Ugin's Nexus as a one-print mythic from a decade old set. But if it turns out to be an Against the Odds strategy - which is very possible and perhaps even likely - expect this to be the ceiling for Ugin's Nexus.
Finally, the Breaking News bonus sheet from Outlaws of Thunder Junction is already offering some solid deals on reprints and prices are likely to continue to drop. You can snag the Breaking News version of Grindstone (showcase) for under $7 while the Tempest printing is $35. Oko, Thief of Crowns (showcase) is just $8 from $20. Sideboard all star Force of Vigor (showcase) can be had for $9 while the Modern Horizons printing is $20. Archive Trap (showcase) is $7, a 50% drop from its $15 pre-reprint price. Staple reanimation spell Reanimate (showcase) is down under $7 after being $13 a week ago and Crackle with Power (showcase) is down to $5 after being $10 before the reprint. With previous bonus sheets we've seen the prices of the reprinted cards fall hard, bottom out about 6 months after set release and then, especially for staples, quickly rise. I'd look to pick up the Breaking News reprints over the summer because it seems likely that prices will start to tick back up in the fall.
