Much Abrew: Is Up the Beanstalk Breaking Modern, Actually?

Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Much Abrew About Nothing! I keep hearing that Up the Beanstalk is better than The One Ring, that it's the best card printed into Modern in years and that it should have already been banned, but is any of this actually true? Well, today we're going to cascade into some Up the Beanstalks, pitch some evoke Elementals and find out on Much Abrew About Nothing!

Wrap Up

So is Up the Beanstalk broken in Modern, actually? It seems that the answer is yes, or at least it is broken in the context of a format ruled by free evoke Elementals that trigger it and efficient cascade spells to find it. While we did end up dropping the last match of our league to Rakdos Scam giving us a 4-1 record, in general it didn't even feel like we were playing the same game as our opponent. Before some clunky running against Scam (and getting our hand stripped by Grief both games) we only dropped a single game against Storm and in most of our matches our only real concern was losing by timing out or drawing so many cards we would deck ourself, the possibility of our opponent actually killing us with Magic actions wasn't really there. While there's a conversation to be had about what exactly is making the deck so busted (honestly, the evoke Elementals are probably the biggest issue) there's no doubt the deck and Up the Beanstalk itself lives up to the hype. It's an absurd card in an absurd deck in an increasingly absurd format.

Anyway, that's all for today. As always, leave your thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions in the comments, and you can reach me on Twitter @SaffronOlive, or at SaffronOlive@MTGGoldfish.com.
