Fish Five-0: Esper Bolas
There was a Magic Fest Online Qualifier that recently put the four color Bolas deck on the map, but I had an issue of not enough white sources and not enough sweepers. Obviously, the original list was very much tuned for an online qualifier meta but seemed to have a rough time on the ladder so here's the list I used to get to mythic!
Gameplan
The deck is a Superfriends/Tap-out Control deck that is looking to curve out with Planeswalkers.
It's got the usual suspects for Planeswalkers but I added Kaya, Orzhov Usurper as a way to deal with the rise in cat decks. Kaya being able to gain us the much needed life while being able to exile Witch's Oven is huge.
As I had mentioned, I felt like we need a good clean sweeper as Ritual of Soot wasn't enough because of Questing Beast and Cavaliers. Since we're already trying to cast Elspeth Conquers Death I figured we should just go up the white sources and get a clean sweep. The addition of white resources and a clean sweep has definitely paid off and made the climb on the ladder a piece of cake.
Why Four Colors?
The red is only for Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God as he is such a powerhouse with all the Planeswalkers in the meta. He can come down and copy other walkers or just flat out remove a problematic Nissa, Who Shakes the World! Bolas is quite easy to cast thanks to the silent MVP of our deck, Interplanar Beacon. Seriously, the card has gained me so much life over the course of a game. We also have The Elderspell in the main deck for a surprise victory.
Conclusion
The deck went 5-1 and performed quite well. If Temur Flash continues to have an uptick in popularity, this deck will have a pretty tough time as they're loaded to the brim with counterspells which is tough for us as we play one big walker a turn and almost all of them get countered by Mystical Dispute. It's because of Mystical Dispute being all over the place that I'm loving Agonizing Remorse so maybe it's time to add more copies to the 75. I also think the deck really suffers against Temur Adventures as we can't really one for one them. They usually drown us in value while also being able to apply pressure but the good news is that deck is on the downswing! If you can continue to dodge those matchups, you should be able to climb easily as I took this from Plat 4 all the way to Mythic 383!
Thanks for tuning in! Keep the Bolas party going and I'll see ya at the next one.
