Fish Five-0: A Compleat Temur Midrange
Gameplan
A popular deck online right now is Temur Midrange and I wanted to see what the archetype played like while also being able to play with a few cards we don't see much of.
We've got the usual suspects in the red and green side of spells but I wanted to try a card I liked a lot during Strixhaven's spoiler season. Decisive Denial seems like a fun card that can serve as a solid counterspell for all the noncreature things going on in Standard. On top of that, it can still be used as removal. Quite often, these decks will have a ton of spells like Mana Leak but the spell is weaker late game. This card allows us to fight things, making it a solid top deck. On top of that, Tamiyo, Compleated Sage can come down a whole turn earlier with two less loyalty or can be used as our five drop to return a fallen Esika's Chariot or some other threat! On top of that, being able to tap down a problematic creature to buy ourselves time isn't bad!
Conclusion
The deck looks to combine the aggressive starts with some permission and tempo elements which is exactly what we like to see. Being able to make a control deck have to board a little awkwardly to deal with our counter magic is nice. Of course, this means we trade off the consistent early aggression but this should allow us to squeeze some bombs in. I'm still not sure how we beat Wedding Invitation outside of just being more aggressive. Still the deck has some sweet play to it!
