Fish Five-0: 5C Binder Fires (Standard, Magic Arena)
When you can't figure out what to play, why not play all of it!?
Gameplan
The list stems from the list piloted by the legend, Shota Yasooka at MC7. The deck pilots like a grindy midrange deck but we have a sweet value machine in Niv-Mizzet Reborn.
Just casting a five mana 6/6 with flying is already pretty sweet but with an 'enters the battlefield' ability that will usually draw us at least one card and potentially, even more, is really juicy. Lists like this have been around but the issue was that they were jam-packed with a ton of color pairs which oddly made the deck a bit less powerful as we played cards that only took up space. After the MC, the list was a bit more refined and trimmed the excess cards and after doing so, the deck is a mean value machine that is a bit more consistent!
Speaking of consistency, Fires of Invention helps with the mana base so we're not stuck with a ton of Casualties of War in hand or anything like that. All we need to do is make sure we have lands. Another thing about this list is the fact that it doesn't use Fae of Wishes which is definitely the direction we want to go if we're playing a 5C deck. I would always assume that if we're playing Fires, we need to add Fae of Wishes but this really frees up our sideboard slots and allow us to have more useful creatures like Deputy of Detention in our sideboard.
Because of all the cat oven decks running around, its amazing having a main deck card like Ethereal Absolution as it gives us a way to attack graveyards while also growing our board. The card does it all! Its even a win con on it's own as we can start building our own army. Its because of this card that I think a singleton copy of Garruk, Cursed Huntsman is pretty sweet. We can start making 3/3 wolves!
Conclusion
Woweeeee, we got the 5-0! The deck was so much fun to play as its power level was perfect. We drowned opponents in card advantage while also blowing up their lands and etc. I haven't played against any pure control decks with this deck but I assume that a resolved Niv-Mizzet, Reborn will usually pull us pretty far ahead. It also doesn't hurt that we have four copies of Shifting Ceratops out of the sideboard. To be honest, I feel this list is currently perfect and I'll probably stream this deck a bit more with the weeks to come because it was so much fun. I'd love to add a few more planeswalkers but I feel like that is always true when it comes to me and deck building. Does the deck need them? Probably not so just run the list posted above!
