Commander Clash S5 E9: Unpopular Commanders! (Akiri & Ravos vs. Garna vs. Niambi vs. Rohgahh)

Welcome back to Commander Clash! This week we're showing some love to the most unloved commanders: each of us have picked a commander with some of the least amount of decks built around them according to EDHREC. Here's what we picked:

  • Richard champions his most hipster tribe yet, the truly underground Kobold Tribe, with its barely known leader, Rohgahh of Kher Keep
  • Seth plays some durdly Control deck looking to assemble a convoluted 5+ card combo or something (who knows) with Niambi, Faithful Healer
  • Tomer sacrifices his entire board over and over again for value with a weird Sacrifice Combo deck fueled by Garna, the Bloodflame
  • Vincent has a different spin on the Artifact archetype, showcasing a unique Mardu Artifact build with lots of Myr and sacrificing for value using the partners Akiri, Line-Slinger and Ravos, Soultender

Are these unpopular commanders merely bad, or do they have untapped potential? Let's find out! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash. and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Post-Game Thoughts

I thought the decks were pretty sweet this week. It's a shame that my generic Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts combo overshadowed what all the decks -- including my own -- can do. My reasoning for adding the combo was that I was already running Conscripts as a way to deal with opposing creatures since I have numerous sac outlets which lets me sacrifice any creature that I steal. Unfortunately the combo is easier to pull off than anything else my deck wanted to do and it's hard to disrupt since it requires an opponent to have an instant speed answer ready for me.

Generally I avoid easy win combos like this one, especially when they don't fit the deck's theme, but this time I underestimated how easy this combo was. My bad!

Next Week: Planar Commander!

Each of us will be picking a single Magic: the Gathering plane and building a deck with only cards that explicitely depict that plane. For example, if someone picked the plane of Ravnica, they could play all the cards from the original RAV block, RTR block, and any other card that shows Ravnica like Krenko, Mob Boss and Mizzix of the Izmagnus.
