Commander Clash: MagicFest Las Vegas Spectacular - Oathbreaker (Teferi, Time Raveler vs. Venser, the Sojourner vs. Liliana, Death's Majesty)

Welcome back to Commander Clash! We'll officially be kicking off Season 7 (with a new lineup!) next week, but in the meantime, we have another special episode filmed live from Magic Fest Las Vegas! Today we're trying out a new, Commander-ish but not quite Commander format: Oathbreaker! If you've never heard of Oathbreaker, here's a brief overview: rather than having a legendary creature as your commander you have a planeswalker and a signature spell (which can be any instant or sorcery in of your commander's colors), instead of 100 cards singleton deck Oathbreaker uses a 60 card singleton deck. The format also has its own banned list. Otherwise, Oathbreaker is played exactly like Commander! The Goldfish crew each build (mostly budget friendly) Oathbreaker decks to bring with us to Las Vegas, and using our janky recording set up we managed to record a match for all of you! Here's is what we have today:

  • Crim builds a "fun" deck featuring his favorite planeswalker Teferi, Time Raveler as his commander and Silence as his signature spell
  • Seth stays on brand using Venser, the Sojourner and his signature spell Cloudshift to blink enters the battlefield triggers, hopefully with Panharmonicon on board
  • Richard looks to reanimate creatures with Liliana, Death's Majesty after stocking his graveyard with his signature spell Entomb
  • Tomer is in the game in spirit (even though physically he was on a cruise and not in Las Vegas) and also on paper, thanks to Crim's artistic flare

How does Oathbreaker play out? Let's find out! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Wrap Up

Oathbreaker was a lot of fun! Having a planeswalker and a spell in the command zone really changes the outcome of the game. Heading into the match I was pretty worried when Crim said he was playing Teferi, Time Raveler and Silence, which seemed like one of the least fun (and more competitive) takes on the Oathbreaker format, but even with just three players (and a picture of Tomer) the multiplayer nature of the game made it so even a potentially broken combo of planeswalker and signature spell could be kept in check. While I don't think Oathbreaker will ever replace Commander for me, it is a really interesting variance that is certainly worth checking out. Next Week

Next week we kick off season seven of Commander Clash. We know Richard is on the bench this season, playing the super-sub roll when the regular cast needs a week off, but who is filling his jank tribal shoes? You'll have to tune in to next week's anything goes match to find out! Until then, leave your thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions in the comments, and you can reach me on Twitter @SaffronOlive, or at SaffronOlive@MTGGoldfish.com.
