$100 Omnath, Locus of Creation | Commander Abridged Gameplay | 4C Landfall

Hey friends, I'm back with another budget gameplay video for you: Budget Omnath, Locus of Creation. Omnath is the face of the latest set, Zendikar Rising, and was clearly designed to sell the set to us Commander players. And WOTC succeeded in that goal at least, since Omnath is by far the most popular commander out of the set, even if the card caused less than desirable effects in other formats.

Omnath is the most powerful Landfall commander ever printed. It draws you a card when it enters the battlefield and comes with a supercharged landfall trigger that has three different effects: the first trigger gains you 4 life, the second generate RGWU mana, and the third deals 4 damage to each opponent and each opposing planeswalker. The most powerful trigger here is the mana trigger, which is trivial to get each turn since getting two landfall triggers is as easy as playing and cracking a fetchland (Wooded Foothills). Put all these abilities together at just four cmc and you've got a powerhouse of a card.

But Omnath's power doesn't just come from its own card text, but also from the fact that this is the first ever 4C Landfall commander, which means you can run four colors' worth of the best Landfall and Lands Matter cards in the same deck. Landfall is an incredibly deep and powerful archetype and getting to run the best cards in the archetype from four different colors is unprecedented and incredibly powerful, letting you run stuff like Emeria Shepherd, Tatyova, Benthic Druid, and Omnath, Locus of Rage all in the same deck. So yeah, Omnath, Locus of Creation is the real deal, and it's no wonder why it's skyrocketing in popularity amongst Commander players.

Our Omnath, Locus of Creation deck is a standard Landfall list: we've got a bunch of cards that trigger from lands entering the battlefield, like Felidar Retreat, Tatyova, Benthic Druid, Rampaging Baloths, and Phylath, World Sculptor. To maximize the amount of landfall triggers we can get per turn we've got tons of land ramp like Springbloom Druid and Roiling Regrowth, ways to bounce and replay our lands like Mina and Denn, Wildborn, and fetchlands like Evolving Wilds. So the idea is to put tons of lands into play, getting tons of landfall triggers, and overwhelm the table with a huge token army. It's simple but highly effective.

Even on a tight budget the deck practically builds itself. The deck was initially $100 when I built it, but the price is dropping now that Zendikar Rising has been out for another week and supply is catching up to demand.

Post-Game Thoughts

I think the deck had an incredible performance. The combination of Risen Reef and all the Landfall cards that happen to be Elementals, most notably Zendikar's Roil, was an absurd value engine this game, though it's not like the deck is lacking in value engines. The only cards that severely underperformed were the slow fetchlands: the Panoramas being the worst (Naya Panorama), along with Warped Landscape and the Mirage fetchlands (Grasslands). They can provide double landfall triggers, but they're so slow and tap for colorless which sets you behind way too much to be worth running. I'll be replacing them for basic lands.

I made some other minor adjustments like adding more removal (Sylvan Reclamation) and another high synergy finisher (Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar), and at this point I'm really happy with where the deck is at. I will probably make a few more tweaks in the future to lower the price even further but this is what it looks like now:
