Description

Hey /r/budgetdecks! After playing against a ton of Mono Black Zombies, U/W Monument and Ramunap Red this weekend, I wanted to try and make my favorite sort of deck (mill) that could hopefully stack against them.

NOTES ON THE DECK
* Baral, Chief of Compliance is a very important card to us, as it speeds up the entirety of our deck. However, he isn't going to make the deck fail if we don't have him. Against Ramunap Red, your common early threat is Abrade, sometimes Incendiary Flow. Sand Strangler is becoming more prevalent in the sideboard as well. Zombies, we worry about Fatal Push, so beware playing Baral without having two mana open to save him. Spell Queller can snatch him up and reduce our tempo. Keep in mind the ruling on Queller- "If Spell Queller leaves the battlefield before its enters-the-battlefield triggered ability resolves, its leaves-the-battlefield triggered ability triggers, resolves, and does nothing. Then its first triggered ability resolves and exiles the spell forever." Therefore, it isn't often worth for us to counter Spell Queller. We would rather kill it with Doomfall, Yahenni's Expertise, or use Consign // Oblivion to bounce it.

* When using Compelling Argument: You want to cycle this card unless you pull it after getting a Fraying Sanity out. It isn't worth the mill unless you cast it turn 4 with a Baral and Fraying Sanity out or turn five with Fraying Sanity, Baral, and Mirrorpool in most cases.

* Same goes for Razaketh's Rite. We want to cycle it unless using it to search for a Startled Awake or Compelling Argument can kill or a Yahenni's to survive (unlikely at T5).

* We would love to use Mirrorpool with Startled Awake or Torment of Hailfire, but the soonest we can for Startled Awake T7 and the soonest it's probably worth for Torment of Hailfire is T8. That's scary and unlikely in a most match-ups. It's actually fine to use it with Compelling Argument if you have Fraying Sanity out, as it turns a 5 mill into a 20 mill. If this helps you, it's roughly equivalent to 7 unrecoverable (probably) health for 4 mana. Compared to most burn spells, we are ahead of the curve.

* Geier Reach Sanitarium has obvious uses- paying for Mirrorpool's activation, helping us get rid of worthless cards in initial match-ups (E.g. we're in game one against a creature light deck and want to cycle Yahenni's), and make them mill more to Fraying Sanity. Don't forget to leave it open though if their draw phase on their turn is their last card. Once activated, if they can't draw a card, they automatically lose.

* To preemptively answer a question concerning the deck, "Why are you not using Void Shatter/Disallow/Murder/Ruinous Path/FlayingTendrils/[insert card with three mana cost and two are the same mana color here]?" In order to ensure having the required double mana by turn three with the greatest possible percentage, we need 17 sources of that color. We don't have that for black mana and while we have 18 possible for blue, it's statistically not going to occur as often as we want given some of our land's requirements. As such, our spells that require two of the same mana don't occur until turn four, which we're perfectly capable of doing damn near every game.

* If you are getting smashed by early creatures, consider switching out Torment of Hailfire for Flaying Tendrils or Grasp of Darkness despite what I said and pray Ixalan has a good black sweeper.
