Deck Primer / Description
The term "Simic" belongs to the blue and green-aligned Guild from the Ravnica sets. This deck gives you the creature-heavy aggression of green, with the control and card draw benefits of blue. The sideboard gives you more counterspells and removal if you need them.
The main aim of this deck is to flood the battlefield with Merfolk (helped along by Deeproot Waters), and boost them up with +1/+1 counters. Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca is marvelously versatile here, and the more Merfolk you have on board, the better he gets.
Breeding Pool, Hinterland Harbor and/or Botanical Sanctum are much better choices for 2-color lands than Temple of Mystery and Thornwood Falls, as they don't come in tapped (if certain conditions are met). They're considerably pricier, but well worth the investment if your opponents have creature-heavy aggro decks.
Feel free to experiment with other Merfolk creature cards, like Combine Guildmage, Jade Guardian, Jadelight Ranger, Merfolk Branchwalker, Merfolk Skydiver, Mist-Cloaked Herald, River Sneak, Seafloor Oracle, Shaper Apprentice, Shapers of Nature, Tidebinder Mage or Triton Shorestalker.
Collected Company is a far better card than Incubation // Incongruity, but costs considerably more. If you already have it, or if you're willing to spend some extra money, this deck is certainly a great place to use it.
The sideboard is pretty flexible-- the goal is to have a suite of counterspells, protection, and some removal. Blossoming Defense can be used in place of Dive Down, and feel free to substitute Kasmina's Transmutation with Frogify or Deep Freeze. If you find that the counterspells in this list aren't effective against your particular playgroup, definitely swap them for others.
