Deck Primer / Description

"Mill" decks get their name from the card Millstone, which slowly grinds away the cards from your opponent's deck. These days, there are more efficient (some would say, cruel) ways to "mill out" your opponent. This is one of them.

Feel perfectly free to replace Didn't Say Please with Thought Collapse, as these cards are functionally identical. I just used Didn't Say Please in this list purely out of personal preference. You might also want to replace River's Rebuke with Flood of Tears.

If you're willing to spend some extra money, or if you already have the cards, try running Jace, Memory Adept instead of Startled Awake. You could also try cutting some of the removal or counterspells for 2 copies of Fleet Swallower, for added fun factor. The downside is that it's a very mana-costly card (7 mana), and its mill ability depends on it attacking. Since it doesn't have haste, it's left sitting on the battlefield doing nothing for 1 turn-- during which your opponent might get rid of it. In contrast, Sphinx Mindbreaker mills your opponent just by entering the battlefield. Even if your opponent removes it on that same turn, it's already done its damage. Plus, if you target Sphinx Mindbreaker with Unsummon or Blink of an Eye, you can cast it again and mill even more. You can do the same thing with Merfolk Secretkeeper. What fun! (for you, not your opponent)

Another spin on this deck type is to run a bunch of Persistent Petitioners equipped with Screaming Shield or Evanescent Intellect, replacing several of the other cards (but keeping Drowned Secrets and at least 4 counterspells). Additionally, if you aren't able to get any Sphinx's Tutelage, you can replace it with Psychic Corrosion.
