Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainers are all tied to Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls in Commander. The Rakdos precon Commander is the most popular new legend from Duskmourn according to EDHRec and it really wants to you to be dealing damage to your opponent during each of their turns. As a result, a ton of cards that fit in a Valgavoth spiked this week. Razorkin Needlehead (borderless) gained 95% to $13 thanks to its ability to ping opponents when they draw a card, Zo-Zu the Punisher jumped 34% to $35 thanks to its ability to burn when a player makes a land drop, and Chandra, Awakened Inferno gained 342% to $12 thanks to its consistently damaging emblem.
Meanwhile in Standard, Zur, Eternal Schemer (prerelease) is on the rise, gaining 745% this week thanks to its ability to turn the Overlords and Rooms of Duskmourn into creatures. While the set is too new to have much tournament data, the Zur Overlord archetype was a popular one during the Magic Arena early access day and might actually have some legs in Duskmourn Standard. If it doe,s Zur could go even higher, it is a mythic after all, but for now we'll have to wait and see.
Finally, we had some massive Commander bans this week with Nadu, Winged Wisdom, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt (borderless), and Dockside Extortionist all meeting their end in the format, which is having a huge impact on prices. Nadu was already cheap so it doesn't really matter, but the other three cards were among the most expensive in the format with Jeweled Lotus and Dockside Extortionist around $100 while Mana Crypt (borderless) was around $225. Today you can snag copies of Mana Crypt (borderless) on TCGplayer for around $125, Jeweled Lotus around $50, and Dockside Extortionist for $33. The question is where do the prices go from here? I think this really depends on the future of CEDH. Outside of Cubes and maybe Vintage for Mana Crypt (borderless), these cards don't really see play in (or are even legal in) non-Commander formats, which means their demand should drop to near zero without Commander play, but it's also possible that the recent bannings spur the CEDH community to create their own ban list, which would almost certainly allow these cards and potentially cause their prices to start rising again. If you own these cards there are really only two paths forward: you either sell as quickly as possible in case prices continue to drop, taking a 50% loss compared to last week, or you simply keep holding if you think that these cards will eventually be legal in CEDH. If anything, these bannings show that Magic in general and now Commander in specific, is anything but predictable.
