Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Oko, Thief of Crowns Chulane, Teller of Tales Mox Amber

This week the biggest financial news is the impending release of Throne of Eldraine. Although the set doesn't officially come out until Friday in paper, it's already been out for a few days on Magic Arena and Magic Online, and the results of early testing are starting to cause some price movement. The biggest winner was Oko, Thief of Crowns (up 36% to $30), which seems to be everywhere in the early days of Standard, both as a stand-alone threat thanks to its high loyalty and low mana cost, and in Food-based decks taking advantage of cards like Wicked Wolf and Gilded Goose. Despite being very powerful, it's hard to imagine that Oko, Thief of Crowns can maintain anywhere near its current price. Discounting Throne of Eldraine, the most expensive mythic in Standard is Hydroid Krasis at just under $22. Unless Oko, Thief of Crowns unexpectedly breaks out in Modern, it should end up $20 or less in a few months, even if it is one of the stronger cards in Standard. Otherwise, Mono-Black Aggro and Rakdos Aggro have been getting some hype, which is increasing demand (and the price tag) of key threats like Spawn of Mayhem (up 110% to $5.69) and Knight of the Ebon Legion (up 37% to $5.83).

Sadly, due to low supply, the cards from the Throne of Eldraine Brawl pre-constructed decks are absurdly priced at the moment. In fact, the average value of a Brawl precon is currently over $130 - significantly more than the Commander 2019 precons, even though they contain just 60 cards rather than 100. Wizards has promised that a reprinting is on the way, which should normalize the price of cards like Arcane Signet, Chulane, Teller of Tales, Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, Knights' Charge, and Alela, Artful Provocateur, all of which are between $25 and $35. Please don't buy singles at this price: If you want the new Brawl cards right away, your best bet is probably to pick up a set of the four decks from someplace like Ebay for somewhere between $140 and $160, otherwise wait for the reprinting and for people to open Collector's Boosters which also contain the cards in the ancillary slot.

Finally, we have some seemingly strange finance news: Mox Amber, widely mocked as the worst Mox of all time when it was printed, jumped 42% this week to $17 even though it just rotated from Standard. The reason for the price increase? It's part of a new combo deck in Modern that revolves around Emry, Lurker of the Loch. With a Jeskai Ascendancy on the battlefield alongside Emry, two copies of Mox Amber (or Mox Opal, which the deck also plays) goes infinite. The main idea is to use Jeskai Ascendancy to untap Emry, Lurker of the Loch as you keep casting Mox Ambers from your graveyard (the second copy legend rules the first, so you always have in the graveyard to cast). You can float mana in between to make infinite mana, and then eventually win with a huge Emry, Lurker of the Loch thanks to Jeskai Ascendancy's pumping ability, or just loot through your deck with Jeskai Ascendancy and win with Grapeshot, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, (em>Mirrodin Besieged</em) or any number of finishers. Keep an eye on the Magic Online and Star City Open results over the next couple of weeks. If the deck ends up being legitimate, the sky is the limit for Mox Amber. As we've seen with Mox Opal (currently $126), when a Mox ends up a four-of in a top tier Modern deck, prices can get out of control quickly.
