Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance was fairly quiet. In Standard, while the overall trajectory of Spider-Man cards is still down, a few of the chase cards from the set bounced from their post-presale lows, led by Electro, Assaulting Battery, which climbed 38% to $9, and Miles Morales, which gained 35% to $7. Meanwhile, Spider-Man collector booster boxes have quite literally come full circle. Back in June, before Final Fantasy sent prices spiking, you could preorder a Spider-Man collector booster box for $548. After Final Fantasy released to great fanfare, prices shot up to nearly $1,000, but over the past three weeks prices have fallen hard, with boxes now back down to $548. While it does give me some joy to see speculators and scalpers left holding the bag, the big lesson here is to be cautious with presales. While some sets are Final Fantasy, most aren't.
In Commander, Shelob, Child of Ungoliant doubled up to $4 this week. While Spider-Man didn't offer much to Shelob commander decks since most of the best Spiders are in the wrong colors, I built Cosmic Spider-Man for Commander Clash recently, and Shelob was one of only two in-universe Spiders that made the cut in the deck. So I imagine the increase comes mostly from players putting Shelob in the 99 as they build around Cosmic Spider-Man or Eddie Brock, two of the four most popular commanders from the set.
Finally, the Aftermath rare Danitha, New Benalia's Light (showcase) gained 74% this week to over $3. The card has been slowly climbing from bulk for the past couple of months, mostly thanks to Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER commander decks. It will be interesting to see what happens with Aftermath cards as we move further and further away from its release. The mini boosters were super unpopular, which likely leaves the set with lower supply than most and could lead to larger price spikes in the future as some of the cards find homes in Commander decks.
