Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, Dominaria United is having a huge impact on the market across formats. While the biggest gainer in Standard was Wedding Announcement which more than doubled up to around $10 thanks to increased play in various BWx Midrange deck in Standard, perhaps even more interesting is The Meathook Massacre ticked up another 9% to around $75. Considering that around 75% of Standard decks are playing this enchantment, it's becoming a huge barrier of entry for paper Standard. The six most-played decks in Standard are all black variants and they all cost between $570 and $693, making Dominaria United Standard one of the most expensive Standards we've had in years. Thankfully the non-black decks in the format are much more reasonably priced, with several in the $100 to $200 price range, although just how competitive these decks are remains to be seen.
Speaking of The Meathook Massacre, let's say you want a copy for Commander, is it worth waiting for the enchantment to rotate from Standard? Recent history suggests that it might not be, as cards that are popular in Commander don't tend to see much (if any) of a price drop when they rotate from Standard. Perhaps the best comparison for The Meathook Massacre is The Great Henge, which is another mythic that's a staple in both Standard and Commander. The Great Henge was around $50 through its life in Standard and while it did briefly drop down near $40 around rotation, it quickly rebounded and is now over $60. While I expect the price of The Meathook Massacre to come down a bit, I wouldn't expect to see a huge drop at rotation. Let's say it falls back down to around $50. Is saving $20 or $25 worth not having The Meathook Massacre in your deck for the next 11 months? That's something you'll have to decide.
Finally, thanks to the legendary theme of Dominaria United, cards like Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper and Reki, the History of Kamigawa are once again on the rise. The problem for these cards is that we've seen the same thing happen in the past only for prices to normalize onces the hype wears off. Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper spiked to $20 back in 2017 for similar reasons but had fallen all the way back under $3 before spiking again this week. Meanwhile if you look at the price chart for Reki, the History of Kamigawa, it has seen at least four buyouts over the past few years shooting up to $10 or $15 before falling back down to $5 or $6. If you're willing to be patient and wait about six months there's a good chance you'll be able to pick these cards up at a discount. But if you just can't wait to run them in your legendary tribal deck, you're going to have to pay a premium.
