Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest gainer was the Godzilla, King of the Monsters printing of Zilortha, Strength Incarnate with the Dino doubling up to $44. Just a couple of months ago the buy-a-box promo was as low as $7, making its climb pretty staggering, especially considering I can't figure out what changed to suddenly make Godzilla such an expensive card. As far as I can see, there isn't a hot new commander to support it. Maybe it's simply a part of the Final Fantasy bubble, with speculators betting that another iconic crossover card is undervalued, but regardless, if you want a Godzilla, King of the Monsters, it's going to cost you.
Meanwhile in Legacy, the common Faerie Macabre is up to around $5 a copy, varying slightly based on the printing. Right now in Legacy Reanimator is at the top of the meta, and Faerie Macabre is one of the go-to sideboard answers to slow down the strategy, which has led to it doubling up over the past couple of weeks. It's been reprinted multiple times including Masters sets and a couple of Duel Decks. If you've got copies laying around, they are worth pulling from your bulk.
Finally, checking in on Spider-Man, we're finally moving out of the presale period, and prices fell a ton this week. While this is partly because presale prices are absurdly high, a card like Mister Negative is a perfect example. A week ago TCG Mid was over $50. Today you can snag copies for $2.50. While not every card fell 93% like Mister Negative, most cards from the set dropped between 50% and 75% this week from their presale highs. While I'm still not sure where prices go from here—because it's super hard to sort actual dislike for the set from the always overly negative internet reaction—the clearest lesson is to avoid buying cards during presales. You aren't just paying too much, but with how inflated Universes Beyond prices can be, way too much.
