Battle for Zendikar Spoilers
|
|
We received a TON of spoilers of this week. We got to see the new planeswalkers Kiora, Master of the Depths and Ob Nixilis Reignited. We got confirmation of enemy man-lands in Lumbering Falls and Shambling Vent (separately, MaRo confirmed the five man-lands will be split between BFZ and OGW). We received a bunch of cool new cards including Void Winnower, Undergrowth Champion and Bring to Light. We also received the new art for several Expeditions cards in Temple Garden, Godless Shrine, Flooded Strand, and Misty Rainforest. There are way too many spoilers to list everything here, so be sure to check out all the latest on our Battle for Zendikar Spoilers Page. Be sure to check out SaffonOlive's financial review of some of the big spoilers this week in The Financial Impact of BFZ: Ob Nixilis, Kiora, Bring to Light and Undergrowth Champion. Oh, we even had a special word from Kanye:

Magic Online leagues launched this week with the Standard format. I took it for a test run with Mono Red and loved it. I was able to play 10 matches going 9-1 in just two hours — normally that's the time for two rounds of a daily! Hop onto Magic Online and try out Leagues today. For more information on entry and prizes, check out the Leagues Payout page.

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

It's been a Slivery week in MTGfinance. On the back of the Top 8 performance of the Collected Company Slivers deck in last weekend's SCG Open, Sedge Sliver is the second-most-viewed card on MTGGoldfish this week, and rightly so &emdash; it spiked from about $2.50 to $25 for a short time and now rests at $8, with buylists paying $4.17. But Sedge Sliver is far from the only member of its tribe on the move this week. Sliver Hive is up 23 percent to $3.98, Sliver Hivelord is up 6 percent to $8.40, and Galerider Sliver is up 7 percent to $4.33.
Let's talk about a tribe that could be the next Slivers: Allies. One thing that has been constant on my Twitter feed this week is a handful of high-level pros talking about their success with Allies in Modern. This is pre-Battle for Zendikar, so the deck will only get better a few weeks from now when the new cards become legal. The primiere uncommons in the deck, Hada Freeblade and Kazandu Blademaster have started to climb and currently have low-supply on TCGplayer. Some enterprising financier could buy either one out for about $100 which would likely reset their prices to $1.00-$2.00 as opposed to the current $0.30-$0.40. And this at a time when demand will likely be at its highest because of BFZ hype.
Another sneaky pickup is Champion of the Parish which has been a four-of in the Ally decks I've run into on Magic Online. Even though he himself is not an Ally, most of the best Allies are humans, so Champion of the Parish does benefit from being in an Ally deck. As of right now, the deck does not have a second one-drop after Hada Freeblade, although this could change with Battle for Zendikar. So far his price hasn't budged from $2.60, but if/when Allies (or the Norin the Wary deck) spike a Modern tournament, Champion of the Parish could double up.
Finally, Hardened Scales continues to climb. This week it's up 25 percent to $2.49. I'll believe Hardened Scales is good when I actually see a good Hardened Scales deck, but it might be picking up some of the Ally hype which would make me feel much better about its prospects. I haven't really been impressed when I've seen it used as a build-around-me card since it requires you to play cards that are incredibly bad when you don't draw Hardened Scales (I'm looking at you Servant of the Scale), but if it can just slot into a good deck with good cards and make it better, it could deserve and hold its price tag.
