Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest gainers in Standard are two red cards: Razorkin Needlehead (up 161% to $10) and Nova Hellkite (up 92% to over $3). Over the past month, Standard players have been struggling to find a way to compete with Izzet Cauldron, and Mono-Red Aggro is the new flavor of the week after being the one popular non-Cauldron deck to post a positive win%age at last weekend's Spotlight Series event. While the future of Standard is still very much in flux, this does make it exceedingly clear that big paper Standard tournaments still have the power to move the market, and they'll be worth keeping track of moving forward.
Not to be outdone, the Edge of Eternities rare Haliya, Guided by Light shot up 68% this week to $4.50 after breaking into various Ocelot Pride decks in Modern and Legacy. As an in-print rare, its price shouldn't get too out of hand, but it does seem like the warp three-drop was at the very least underestimated during preview season and is on the short list of best Soul Warden effects ever.
Finally, one thing I was expecting to happen—but hasn’t really played out in practice—is old Spider cards spiking because of all the new support from the Spider-Man set. While Shelob, Child of Ungoliant gained 51% this week, it’s still just $1.50, and we haven’t seen mass movement from old Spiders. This is probably because of color identity issues. In Magic, Spiders have traditionally been Mono-Green and Golgari, while in Spider-Man the Spiders are split between colors, and many of the best Spiders are in the “wrong” colors to play with the most popular Spider Commanders from the past. While I’m sure Spider-Man Commander decks will be popular with some players, the amount of crossover with existing Spiders is surprisingly small.
