Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainer was Grove of the Burnwillows. The land has long been a staple in Tron and Eldrazi decks which figured giving an opponent some life doesn't really matter if you are just going to annihilate away your opponent's permanents anyway, and thanks to Modern Horizons 3, these decks are on the upswing in Modern. This big price jump only really applies to the Future Sight printing, which is now $35. You'll save a ton of money if you look for the Iconic Masters reprint, which can still be found for around $10.
Meanwhile in Standard, Archangel Elspeth is the latest piece of Boros Token Control to see a price increase, doubling up to $11.50. The planeswalkers synergy with Caretaker's Talent has taken it from essentially unplayed before rotation to staple in our new post-Bloomburrow world. I wouldn't expect the price to climb too much more since the planeswalker doesn't really see play outside of Standard, but if you need copies, be warned that you are going to pay a premium to play Standard's hot new deck.
Finally, we had some major bannings in Modern this week, but one card that managed to once again dodge the hammer was The One Ring (bundle). The mythic shows up in nearly 50% of Modern decks and after gaining about 19% this week, the price of the artifact continues to rise. The cheapest printing is still the bundle promo which will set you back $102 while the pack printing is just under $125, with special versions being two or three times that. I honestly don't know what to tell you about The One Ring (bundle). If you want to play many decks in Modern, you'll need a playset, although it also seems likely that the card will be banned eventually. Its iconic nature and Commander demand will help soften the blow, but it's hard for me to imagine that the card will maintain its current price if it does get banned in Modern; a drop to $60-ish like other Commander-only mythic staples seems likely. There's not another ban list update until mid-December, so for the short term you are safe. But long term there's a lot of risk in buying or holding copies of The One Ring (bundle).
