Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the big winner was the Wilds of Eldraine rare Questing Druid, which more than doubled up in price to $9, making it - by far - the most expensive rare in the set. While Questing Druid has seen play in Standard from the day it released, the reason for this big increase is that it is now showing up in older formats, finding a home in some builds of Legacy Delver as well as Modern Prowess, and even Jund. While it seems that Questing Druid was underrated when it released, this might be its ceiling. There aren't many non-land rares in Standard that cost more than $10 and considering that Modern staples like Leyline Binding and Ledger Shredder are roughly the same price as Questing Druid is today, it seems unlikely that the two-drop will get much more expensive.
Last week we talked about Aetherworks Marvel (down 9% to $7.30) being bought out in response to Universes Beyond Fallout spoilers revealing an energy sub-theme. This week it was Gonti's Aether Heart's turn. The six-mana artifact is perfect for an artifact-heavy energy deck, offering a consistent source of energy production and possibly an extra turn if you feel like cashing it in. As a one-print mythic, I wouldn't be surprised to see Gonti's Aether Heart spike again as we get closer to the February release of the Fallout set. For now it should stabilize as players focus on the impending release of Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It might be worth snagging copies now if you plan to build Dr. Madison Li just in case.
Last but not least, Doctor Who is still having an impact on the market, with some suspend cards ticking up this week. Chronomantic Escape more than doubled up to over $7, which is an absurd price for a random uncommon that just a few weeks ago was quite literally bulk. Meanwhile, Mox Tantalite ticked up 13% to $15. If you need these cards to build around a new Doctor, there isn't much you can do other than pay the new, higher price or wait a few months for them to drop. This is a good reminder that picking up your Commander cards early is a great way to save some money, which is part of why picking up energy cards now in preparation for the Fallout release in February seems like a good idea.
