Weekly Update (Oct 26): Is Universes Beyond Ruining Commander?

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance starts in Edge of Eternities, where after gaining 59% this week, Quantum Riddler (borderless - surreal space) is now a $60 card. While the warp Sphinx does see Standard play, the real reason for its rise is Modern, where Quantum Riddler (borderless - surreal space) is currently the second most played creature in the format behind Solitude. While you’re going to need the card to play competitive Modern or Standard right now, the long term is a bit fuzzier. Quantum Riddler (borderless - surreal space) doesn’t really see meaningful Commander play, and the meta for 60-card formats is fickle. With seven sets dropping next year, there’s always a possibility something new will shift the meta away from Quantum Riddler (borderless - surreal space), which would likely drop its price. If you have copies you don’t need, I’d be tempted to sell them now. While a big crash is unlikely, it’s hard for me to imagine the Sphinx sticking at $50 long term without more Commander play.
Speaking of Modern, the uncommon Claws of Gix has been on the rise from around $1 at the end of September to nearly $4 today, thanks primarily to Weapons Manufacturing. Claws of Gix is the perfect Urza's Saga target in decks looking to sac Munitions tokens, which has taken it from unplayed to an archetype staple in Modern. Long term, the question is whether a real Weapons Manufacturing deck sticks around in the format. While early results are encouraging, it’s really too early to tell.
Finally, in Commander, the one-print Onslaught rare False Cure gained 42% this week to $7 thanks to Mister Negative life-swap decks, where if you play False Cure before you play Mister Negative, you can exchange life with someone at a lower life total than you, draw a bunch of cards with Mister Negative, and likely kill your opponent with False Cure. While the trick is pretty sweet, just keep in mind that False Cure has never been reprinted, and outside of some Mister Negative decks, doesn’t really see play. Once it does get reprinted, its price will likely head back toward bulk.
