We are still dealing with the after effects of Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar this week. While cards that made a big splash on camera and the top eight spiked last weekend (e.g. Liliana, Heretical Healer), for cards and decks that flew under that radar, it took a minute for the community to catch on. As such, this week, the big winners in Standard are linked to decks that performed well at the Pro Tour, but didn't get much hype.
First we have Secure the Wastes (up 23 percent to $3.49) and Nissa, Vastwood Seer (up 3 percent to $25.93) from Sam Black's Bant Tokens list. I asked last weekend whether the deck would catch on or fade away — well, the answer is catch on. Several other writers have lauded the deck this week, and big name pros have been calling it broken. Ben Stark said it was the best Standard deck he's played since Caw Blade.
Second, we have the fetchlands. Bloodstained Mire, Flooded Strand and Wooded Foothills all shot up between 6 and 11 percent this week and are nearing the $25 mark. If you dig into the numbers this week, you'll see these three are by far the most played cards in our current Standard format. Being played at an average of 3.75 copies in more than 50 percent of Standard decks, their prices are starting to reflect this insanely high demand.
On the other side of the bracket, Battle for Zendikar mythics (apart from Gideon, Ally of Zendikar who is maintaining a cool $40) are in free fall mode; many dropping between 15 and 21 percent this week. With the opportunity for a Pro Tour spike gone and Magic Online redemption around the corner, supply is outweighing demand. With more supply to come, I wouldn't expect any too many major changes before Oath of the Gatewatch this winter.
Finally, a quick note on Magic Online. This week marked the first in a series of a monthly Vintage tournaments which not only gives away complete foil and non-foil sets, but also power nine. As a result, Vintage staples are seeing real demand on Magic Online. Moxen increased an average of 18 percent this week, Ancestral Recall increased 20 percent, and Mishra's Workshop 48 percent. Whether these prices stick, or if they are temporary increases as people take advantage of the low spread on Magic Online to buy a deck for the event only to resell it the next day, remains to be seen. Regardless, this tournament series shows that Wizards is serious about eternal formats online, which was unclear over the past few months. It might not be a bad time to buy into Legacy and Vintage online if you have been waiting.
