Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week was a quiet one in the world of Magic finance, but this will likely change once The Brothers' War spoilers kick off at Magic 30 next week. Perhaps the biggest news isn't about Magic cards, but about Wizards as a company. Hasbro released its third quarter earnings report this week and for the first time in as long as I can remember, both profits and revenue from Wizards was down meaningfully. Along with the normal "release schedule" retort (which is often a big factor in Magic's quarter-by-quarter earnings, because the number and type of sets released does vary a lot from year to year) Hasbro also cited Magic consumers becoming more "price sensitive" (which I guess $1000 proxies will do to a community) and royalty payments for making Universes Beyond products as two additional reasons for the decline. It's not all doom and gloom though, Hasbro also mentioned that when the full year results are in, they expect Magic will be up double digits compared to last year.
In Commander, Master of the Feast is on the rise. The Demon increased 32% on the week to over $4 and was as low as $1 just a few months ago. The main reason for the sudden interest in Master of the Feast seems to be Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (showcase). Normally giving each opponent a card each turn cycle is a big enough drawback that decks won't play the 5/5 flier, and this is even true of Demon decks that can take advantage of its creature type, but in Sheoldred decks, giving opponents cards can be an upside since it triggers Sheoldred, the Apocalypse (showcase) to drain away their life. While I'm still not sure I would include Master of the Feast in my Sheoldred builds, a lot of people are, and this new demand is reflected in the increasing price.
Finally in Modern, Grinding Station is up to a massive $30, making it one of the most expensive uncommons in the format and completing its rise from bulk uncommon a few years ago. While there have been Grinding Station combo decks in Modern for a while now, they keep getting new additions set-by-set, with cards like Underworld Breach and Ledger Shredder turning the deck into a legitimate top-tier option. When you add in that Grinding Station's only printing is from Fifth Dawn 20 years ago, the stage is set for a lowly uncommon to end up at $30. On the other hand, being an uncommon means that once Grinding Station is eventually reprinted, the price should drop a lot. So if you have copies you aren't using, it might be worth selling them now while prices are so high.
