Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest gainer was Avatar of Growth. The Game Night mythic was $14 on September 23rd, and today it's up to $49. Outside of being a super low-supply card from a strange and unpopular product, I'm not exactly sure why Avatar of Growth is spiking now. It is an Elemental and an Avatar, so maybe people are betting on synergies from Lorwyn Eclipsed or Avatar: The Last Airbender to turn the card into a staple. For now, if you happened to pick up Game Night and have some extra copies lying around, you might consider selling into the hype.
Meanwhile, the Stronghold rare Mortuary doubled up to $15 this week thanks to Gwenom, Remorseless Commander decks, where it opens up some infinite combo potential with a sacrifice outlet. You can sacrifice a creature, have Mortuary put it on top of your deck, and then cast it for life rather than mana with Gwenom, Remorseless. While Gwenom is the only Commander where Mortuary sees heavy play, considering the card is pushing 30 years old with zero reprints, that’s all it takes to send prices skyward.
Finally, in Modern, the meta is adjusting from last weekend’s Pro Tour, and the biggest financial winner seems to be Goryo's Vengeance. The reanimation spell has been as much as $50 in the past, but multiple reprintings dropped it below $10. In response to a solid performance and high metagame%age at the Pro Tour, the cheapest printings of Goryo's Vengeance, such as the Ultimate Masters version, nearly doubled up this week to just under $20. I'd be cautious about holding long-term though, considering Goryo's Vengeance was already printed in a Commander precon once, and it could happen again, which would significantly drop its price.
