Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It's been a pretty quite week on the finance front. All of the biggest movers come from Commander 2016, where we've seen a lot of the fringe casual reprints lose nearly half of their value in the past week. This was expected considering that the decks are stuffed full of value. It's important to realize that it's unlikely any of these cards (outside of true staples like Chromatic Lantern) will rebound in the near future. As for Standard and Modern, there really isn't much to say. The biggest gains/losses for the week are only a few%, which suggest natural variations in pricing more than relevant finance news.
Since we have some time this week, I wanted to talk a bit about Frontier, the new post-Modern format being pushed by some of the big Japanese stores. While I like the idea of a new format that is bigger than Standard but smaller than Modern, Frontier (which begins with M15) doesn't really appeal to me in its current form: the card pool is simply too small. As far as finance, I don't expect to see any real impact unless Wizards decided to officially pick up the format, which isn't impossible, but if it did happen, it would likely be years in the future.
Let's imagine that two or three years from now Wizards decided to add Frontier to the queue alongside the other supported formats. Should we expect a huge price spike of format staples like we saw with Modern and even Tiny Leaders? I'm skeptical. While I expect the format would have some impact on prices, it's important to remember that the very nature of the format, featuring only new cards, will naturally limited the price of the cards in the format. The sets in Frontier are huge in supply; with both Modern and Tiny Leaders, it was primarily old, low supply cards that saw major price gains. Not to mention the fact that buying in on a format too early is a good way to get burned (see: Tiny Leaders). So for now, my advice is to test and play the format if it interests you, but ignore it from a financial perspective. Even if it beats the odds and becomes the next big thing in terms of tournament formats, I'm not convinced it will have a huge financial impact.
