Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

The big financial news of the week is... the lack of big financial news this week? There haven't been any earth shattering changes, so let's talk about some smaller changes that could be signs of big things to come in the future.
In Standard, Part the Waterveil and Painful Truths each increased 6 percent on the week to $1.51 and $0.71 respectably. Both of these cards have claims to be the most underrated from Battle for Zendikar. Blue sorceries that have the text "take an extra turn" almost always end up being worth at least $4 over the long term, and Part the Waterveil is far from the worst of the bunch. Not only does it have potential to emerge as a control deck finisher either this spring or next fall, but its long term potential is great barring a supplemental product reprinting. It's hard to pass up copies at near-bulk mythic prices. Meanwhile, a Hall of Famer and Modern GBx expert called Painful Truths the "best possible sideboard card for BGx decks," this week, saying that it "puts Dark Confidant to shame," which is quite the endorsement for the near-bulk rare.
Looking at the big picture, do you know how many Standard GPs are on the calendar before rotation in April? Three. Oakland in January, Houston in February, and Paris in March. Do you know how many SCG Standard Opens are on the schedule between now and rotation? Also three. Atlanta and Columbus the end of January, followed by Indianapolis in the middle of March. There simply are not many big events left for Khans of Tarkir and Fate Reforged. We are starting to see the early warning signs of the impending rotation crash among cards from KTK and FRF. Fetches are down a couple percent across the board this week after months of solid gains, Anafenza, the Foremost, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, Wingmate Roc and a bunch of other Standard staples dropped between 5 and 10 percent over the past seven days. Meanwhile there are almost no rotating cards in the winners list, with the exception of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon which gained another 3 percent to just under $44.
What this suggests to me is that you should be dumping any Khans of Tarkir and Fate Reforged cards that you don't need as soon as possible. You should also make a serious evaluation of what you do and do not need in the light of the fact that are very few big Standard events left and the Pro Tour for Oath of the Gatewatch is Modern. Holding onto eternal playables, especially fetchlands, is fine, but everything else must go. Under the old block cadence the "price decrease heading towards rotation" process started 6 to 8 months before rotation. With only four months to go (and a limited number of events left), KTK and FRF cards are going to have to make up for lost time, which means their crash could be faster than at previous rotations. As I've stated before, I'm a fan of playing it conservative until we figure out exactly how the new block cadence will impact prices; I'd much rather sell now than be caught holding the bag later.
