Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Korvold, Fae-Cursed King Bloodsoaked Champion Scalding Tarn

This week, the biggest finance news was the massive list of bannings, with Oko, Thief of Crowns, Once Upon a Time, and Veil of Summer getting banned in Standard, while Wrenn and Six was banned in Legacy, and Narset, Parter of Veils was restricted in Vintage. With the exception of Oko, Thief of Crowns, which has increased in price on the week thanks to its play in non-Standard formats, all of the other banned cards are trending down, with Wrenn and Six leading the way by dropping more than $10 on the week from $76 to $64. On the other hand, having a fresh Standard format has created some winners as well as players scramble to figure out what deck is best in Throne of Eldraine Standard 3.0. Atop this list is the Brawl deck exclusive Korvold, Fae-Cursed King which is a key part of the Jund Sacrifice/Cat Food deck. The five-drop doubled in price on the week to $25. It's a good example of how easy it is for Standard-legal cards that aren't printed in proper Standard sets to shoot up in price with an increase in demand.

Meanwhile in Pioneer, the Mono-Black Aggro deck which broke out a couple of weeks ago is still driving prices with Bloodsoaked Champion being the latest card from the deck to double in price (up from around $1.50 to $3.00) while Mutavault gained another 17% on the week to $20. On the other hand, the success of Mono-Black Aggro might be bad news for Smuggler's Copter (which has increased from $2 to $10) as it has moved up many people's watch list for potential bannings alongside Field of the Dead and Once Upon a Time. Wizards mentioned in their last banned and restricted announcement that Pioneer changes are unlikely this week, which means the smart move might be to cash out on cards that have a high probability of getting banned while there is still time.

Finally in Modern, staples are still losing value. While this is usually just a few% a week, cumulatively this trend is having a major impact on prices. Take Scalding Tarn. Back in September, the fetchland was $100. Now it's down to $80 and still dropping, with the rest of the fetchlands following a similar trajectory. Blackcleave Cliffs was $50 and now it's $31. Chalice of the Void is down from $80 to $60. Buylist prices show even more weakness. While these new prices are appealing, the question is how much support will Modern have in 2020 and beyond. At this point I'd still be skeptical of investing heavily in Modern; it might end up being replaced by Pioneer much faster than we expect.
